New forecast for the week
Forecast from Pete
Posted January 18th, 2010 06:51 AMNice waves this weekend locally. Nothing to put in the history books but Fun indeed . This week starts out a little slow with no waves (ever) locally . SE winds pickup late Wed into Thurs and swing to the S. Should get us back into the ridable range. The Gulf low that had a nice NE fetch a few days ago doesn't look as good. I wouldn't count it out and upcoast spots should recieve some sideband NE swell late Wed/Thursday. Very short lived as the low races into the Atlantic. A better bet is a coastal low to develp off the Carolina's late this week into the weekend. This NE fetch looks much better than our current develping scenario. Loks like Sunday/Monday will be the peak of this event. Winds are iffy with SE winds Sat turning to S Sunday and if the swell sticks around SW on Monday (as yet another front pushes it way thru). Timing will obviously be of essence here to score the goods. I really wish these systems would slow down . One of these days its going to happen. All in all a pretty decent winter so far.
Don't forget this Thursday is the Whitman Historical Museum event. Google Map Link -- Not to be missed and you will come out stoked . Go surf first then come to downtown for the event.
Late but not least , support Surfrider. We have huge plans for this year. Time to do some good for our community. Get involved and support.
Enjoy

Fun leftover windswell at CPB pier last evening. Really clean LB waves up to waist high. I just went out to cruise a few and feel the glide, since I'm just now recovered from my neck snap. Some of the waves were 15 seconds, and sideslipping from the nose was a blast. Glassy waves are fun at almost any size.
If anyone got photos of Darrick Doerner surfing Miami yesterday, he will probably pay you not to publish them. He told me he got some fun waves on his shortboard just after the squalls moved through. He leaves Miami today for Tahoe, and they are expecting up to ten feet of snow, so he will be in the thick of it. He's doing the first SNP testing on a snowboard, so we'll see.
The Expo looked more like the SUP Expo. Ark was there with team riders Ekolu Kalama and Tom Jones. Tom has the world record SUP distance record, having done the whole U.S. west coast. In a couple months he will be paddling his SUP from Key West to N.Y. to raise awareness about how bad plastics are for the ocean, and especially our own reproductive health. That's right....
Tom, let us know when he plans to do it so we can greet him in Miami.
Pete, what's the event consist of on Thursday
Its a replica museum of the one in Bal Harbour. They are going to open it for public viewing. Dudley should be there along with other members of the Whitman clan. There will also be a short film with a question and answer afterwards by Dudley. The Surfrider group went to the Museum last year and we were all blown away. There are artifact and stories of yesteryear as well as replica boards of the first one's ridden in South Fla (probably even the whole East coast). The Whitmans were not only watermen but also inventors and renaisance men. They were credited with many firsts in the fishing /boating world. Light snacks and nibbles will be provided but I'm not cooking for this one. It's their event, we are just mainly helping out . Also involved is the Historical preservation society of SoFlo .
Thanks, Pete, I don't want to miss out on this.
Is this event in any way related to Surfrider?
Yes, we are partially invloved here.
What time, and where is the event? I want to try to make it.

The Boca cam has a peeping turtle
so when are there guna be waves?
Yikes whats up with the turtlehead cam!!
HA, too funny!
that is freaky!!!, like someone's looking back in atcha
One big ole eyeball, I keep waiting for him to blink!
Does it look like there will be waves tomorrow???
Wind forecast is down, proly loggable but not much else. This weekend looks like a better bet (WC with underlying swell up the road, SE WC locally)
"NO" - Gump
Winds have picked up a bit . Should at least get us rideable later.
Don't forget the Whitman museum event is tonight. !!!!!!!!!!
Anyone got a visual this morning?
Nobe: some knee high loggables rolling thru. Haven't been out yet but looks fun. Not too choppy. Green light...
se at 25 and low tide at 5 should be worth a surf
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=fwyf1
Any visuals of South, i took a look around the 60th streets... not much happening 1-2ft maybe. I didnt want to drive to south yet, could be fun tonight I'm thinking. Anyway if you have made the drive to South already plz comment ... Thanks !!!!
2pm on is best bet for rideables at sobe. I would bring a longboard or fish just in case (SE windswells rarely have a lot of juice).
Monday up the road may be fun.
SB from 9am to 12pm; fun knee to thigh SE; fun on longboard.
Maaaaayybe ankle-high, at most, around 14th St. this morning around 7:30 am. I played with my dog instead.
Just checked south. Not really happening allthough there is a nice knee-thigh peak coming thru at 2nd street with some guys on it. Looks like it's building but I left and plan on going back in a couple hrs. Not ridable from 2nd street south to jetty. Best bet is to the north if you are impatient but nothing to rush out for.
PB looks weak, no bueno
Same as earlier, knee at best, 2nd street has a crowded peak. Taking a fish out, not worth ditching your responsibilities.
guess me and the 20 guys out scored on the north side of a certain inlet all afternoon. Was fun+ on a fish..
It was fun after 430 till 6, knee to occ waist + on the DROPS and CLEAN at 4th street! Pete , that was an amazing exhibit on the history of surfing. I just want everybody to know that surfing on the East Coast was started here in MIAMI! The first surfboards shaped on the East Coast were shaped in MIAMI! And the first shop to sell surfboards on the East Coast was in MIAMI! Phins got there man in Nolan! Super Bowl 2011!
Looking like a little more south windswell on tap for late weekend.
poz...? For the old timers ... I wana know how the old dania pier used to break and what waves were there were back then before dredging etc ..I heard commercial pier used to be good as well....any info from my old schoolers??
How much has it changed??
Yea it was a great event last night. Thanks to all who came. Alot of history here.
Last night was Fun x .25 or better. Really fun tiny South swell . I hit it at 4 pm at 3rd st on a big fish and had a blast. Saw Shayne from a distance get insane speed on a right and punt one out. Good form on those little friggers.
More funzzies this weekend
How was last night's History of surfing?
Hopefully a good turnout, bet it was super interesting, unforunately, I was home "helping?" with 6th grade math, WHAT!?, I forgot all that stuff, but was there for support I guess, anyways. . . .
Surf this weekend? hope so and yeah, that Shayne guy rips!!!, either that or he's really good at photoshop!, j/k.
Hope to see you all in the water!
p.s. Volcom Pipeline event is starting Sunday so go pick your team at http://www.fantasyprosurfing.com/, free to join and should be an insane event, Marzo, Irons Bros, Whitz and Dingo, and a batch of East Coaster's. Glos, you gotta no show for the Brazil event, just a heads up
per Ross at CFLsurf.com;
Jan 22 (Fri) - Sunday is your Last Chance for awhile - Quality is iffy, but Sunday will have a 3 foot+ NE swell bumping against 4 feet of SE to S wind waves and 25 knot S winds. The winds are trending SW so just a little more SW on Sunday and just maybe it could be fun. If there is anything left for Monday it will fizzle out by mid-day with 25 to 30 knot SW winds. Air temperatures drop 10 degrees on Monday also. After Monday we head into a period of off-shore winds with very small surf (probably pancake flat).
Pete last night was fun i got a few good ones but man the water was cold
Better chance of lower wind speeds further South on Sunday. Taking into account the swell drop off from the Bahama blockage it won't be easy scoring but it could happen . Nice little NE swell with light to mod SW winds would be nice but the planets are going to have to align
The event last night was amazing. Thanks Pete for posting it on the site so we could learn about it, it was definitely something to go see. I was amazed to see how much surfing culture and history was made right here on our own back yard. The exhibit was impressive!
It was good meeting you in person Pete, put a face to the name.
I actually never thought people were surfing in Miami already in the 30's, I'm so glad i didn't miss out on last night.
Praying for some surf this weekend.
Always cool meeting members , thanks for coming out PanamaD.
offshore low seems to have temporarily stalled out
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/nwatl/flash-ir2.html
appears right in our swell window
goods building sometime sunday
I like what I'm seeing and hearing...hoping for some fun tomorrow...
yes, looks like waves are coming. The question is, will South Beach be as good as up the road a little? Worth the drive to Palm Beach?
I don't think there is enough North in it to reach Sobe. More like SE/S wc down here . Maybe a small bump of mix.
this swell will have a nice pop to it.......bouys should pop tonite as well.....def.. worth a drive
most know a certain town in SPBC is the dividing line between solid swell size and then USUALLY not so much south of there....but this swell may initially have enough NNE to push size onto the northern 1/3 of broward as well.
Winds will cross alot of the waves up in Broward and PB. Inlets will be the call. I would defintely surf here on the WC, then hit PB in the morning Monday. Always waves these past few Sundays during football games, which sucks! I'm rooting for those Jet's, so my Phin's feel the pain when they might have to use there personal lockers here in Miami during the Super Bowl. Maybe that's the kick in the ASS they need!
i was down at Sobe on my bike between 3-4pm. Got caught in huge storm. Winds are E with a touch of NE. No waves yet, but there is a strong wind blowing at the beach, so probably worth a check in the morning.
Outer Canaveral is showing 8ft at 15 second periods......
Visual in Satelllite Beach ~ waist to chest with head high sets. Very disorganized with only a few shoulders. Winds light sideshore. It looks chilly....
South is knee and sloppy, doesnt look very fun but Im going out and will update in a few hrs. Hopefuly better than it looks.
Report from NOBE -thigh to waist high and fair, very low tide.
All buoys are way up but with the strong SE winds its not even worth it. Maybe tomorrow for up the road
current angle makes it look to me like CPB and north will have best swell....although that could work it's way into favored areas of SPBC....seems the most north in the swell may have passed by overnite?
Sobe. Waist high chop. Plenty of guys getting a drop in and one turn. Not too good but worth it if u need to get wet befor heading back to te work week.
Just got out at south, waves r wasit to chest on the peak and choppy
mid Miami Beach solid waist highSE chop. Kind of hard to get amped knowing I am going to grandpas house in Ft Pierce Monday where it will be offshore and shoulder high. Put on a pot of chili old man, I am spending the night! Kids will be in school, and the hacks back at work. Solid solitude.
Sounds like you may score shrimpers
South is inconsistent knee-waist with occassional plus sets. Filling in but so is the lineup. There are some fun ones to be had if you are patient. Worth a shot.
Washing machine chesties on PB island, disorganized but worth getting wet.
I would say today was worth it, I'm sure Kshane, Josue, and Mike would agree.
It was def better that it looked from shore! Fun drops and a turn. Conditions? Well, I took off on a right, and another wave literally formed underneath me as I came down the lil' line. Insta-floater! Weird, but fun! Later pm should be more of the same...
Gump is the evil drop-in king!! Fear his wrath...
yeah right, Mike Laas takes the crown today.
dawn patrol tom morning at sobe may be an option. pack a longboard or fish just in case.
fun..
96th was good. bad current but great sets came in with good fun lines that would build up and dump. Tomorrow morning should go off!!!!
I would have to agree, GUmp. Good seeing the whole crew out too!
the evening session was definitely super fun at 3rd street. Did not catch many of the good sets, but solid waist to shoulder on the sets and dumpy till dark.
Caught lots of fun waves at SoBe during the late afternoon outgoing tide. Average thigh to waist high with lots of plus sets. Basically only 2 spots were working but everybody was sharing. Nice vibe in the water. Insane sandbar!
~peace!~
Surfed perkins with some good friends, was so fun!!!, Stank so bad from all kinds of sea creatures on the beach, crabs, fish, eel, shrimp, skanks from Tootsies...
But whatta drive home.
Great link to check and chill on; . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLh8Hv8rgqg
L8z!
Sobe yesterday evening, was what they said! Received two reports from fishermen of multiple dead fish in the area. One said it looked like lobsterpots but they were fish and I'v seen several dead iguanas around. One hell of a cold snap!
Yea, cold snaps kill fish - snook and tarpon in particular, but there are others.
Small, glassy ones out there today. Get 'em before their gone.
More surf in the PB's (remeber that NE swell due to hit?) S/SW switching more west during the day. You do the math and decide if it's worth it.
That NE swell is towards the end of its life span. With the strongish SW then W winds it may be an iffy proposition.
Any waves (visuals) at South?
Just got a call for a visual of South. Waist high and a bit bigger on sets. Looking fun. Incoming should produce the goods. Hopefully it will hold till later when I get out of work. Another visual coming in 1 hour.
i wouldnt be surprised if sobe was fun this morning
Visual update ( a more realistic one) much smaller than yesterday. Up to waist high not much bigger. " nothing to write home about" is the direct quote from my bother. I'm sure incoming will make it worth it but the pm looks like longboard material.
DAMN!!!,
I was told to call in sick and stay in sat Bch for today,
only to pull up 2ndlight.com just now and BAM!
(told-ya-so coming soon I'm sure)
http://www.2ndlight.com/#
Nice offshore set out the back!,
South Beach was fun this morning, not many people out. Clean south swell, waist high.
- My buddy who is a cop was at Lake Worth Pier this AM. He got hassled in the parking lot by the locals. They said they didn't see his special ID required for surfing there. He had his badge and gun in his lap and said, "How's this for ID?"
That will show them.
BTW when i was at South yesterday evening I parked at Marjorie Stoneman Park on 3rd. Put two boards out on the grass . Hung out in my wagon waiting for a friend. Out of the corner of my eye three young bucks standing over my boards and looking around as if they were about to run off with them. When I asked them what they were doing they asked if they were my boards. I said " No I just laid them down there so someone can take them off my hands" the nerve of these guys.
Who does that kinda sh*t? Who says that to someone? Are they 12? Its one thing to command a little respect for locals in the lineup, but to not let someone surf your local break at all is just childish. idiots.
1:30 update, sloppy and dropping fast.
Yesterday was fun but mostly a good workout up in NMB. South is looking crappy right now, disorganized and in the 5 minutes I stayed looking did not see anything over waist.
Got in the water for an hour yesterday in the ninties block of Collins. Just wanted to avoid the crowd on the north side of the inlet and have some fun. Mad drifty and a tough paddle out for me. Caught a couple decent rides but like mentioned from others above, mainly just a good paddle and workout.
South is beat, best ride I got at lunch was the wave I rode in on my belly.
Checked 71st at noon. Brought the wrong board. I had the fish and the knee high short period chop was LB only. Howling south winds now, but the North winds manana may bring us surf by Wednesday.
~G
I was at south at 7am and it looked knee to wast, went to haulover and it was definitely, better in size and form. Ldeft there at 10 and just got out in NPB, if my father in-laws bday was not tonight, I would still b in the water. Still chest+ on the drops and super peaky with the south swell.
gump - that story about lake worth just proves that cops are always abusing their power by pointing their guns at helpless children.
pete- maybe those kids were just looking for donations to help the victims in Haiti.
The moral of the story is- there's always three sides to every story
:)
Waves at SoBe were O.K. but nothing great. Best early and no bigger than waist high but got all choppy around 1 p.m. and didn't clean up until the wind switched at around 2 - but then the tide was too high and killed it. Down to knee high after that and never really had a line to it. Not at all crowded, though. Never saw more than about 15 people in the water.
~peace!~
looks good today as well anyone have a visual?
Pray For Surf.......to understand the ocean's greatness you have to get wet.......Got a report from the Pool Boys....at a special Hotel in NMB
Hear Waist Plus .....Pretty consistent.
Perfect waves for that Longboard I have for sale....
I checked North beach, 3 different spots around 8:30am. Looked thigh high but closing out. Gulf stream looked up. Should be decent somewhere at the right tide.
sb 9am knee high swell coming in, not really rideable. maybe lb when tides starts coming in..gulfstream is up....
Just got out at Sobe about 1/2 hour ago. Knee high clean loggables. Good for walking the board and goofin around.
anyone knows if theres any waves at south beach???
a/k/a Flat!
kwak - Not to be overly sarcastic, but, what part of kshane's post confused you?
~peace!~
kwak, not to be underly sarcastic, but what part of kshane's post confused you?
KWAK KWAK ??
I like the attempted civility in the use of the word, but!
Fun waves on Monday. Total blast up in NPB. Today the waves are much smaller and that seems to be the trend for the rest of the work week.
i didnt understand a thing he said sorry
Kwak- totally understandable. let me translate:
Sobe=south beach
loggables= good for a long board
walking the board= if you don't take your board for a walk, it will usually pee in the house
goofin around=missing work or masturbating
Hope that clears things up for you.
thak you very much funny clown
lol spectacular!
GLos
Looks like were getting some CHUNKERS on Monday/Tuesday!
Kwak- Would you like me to translate the above text as well?
I would.
Translate this...
Nobe vis, thigh to waist, breaking fast.
Would love to be out there at the moment. Instead, I sit listening to 4th graders presentations. The water would be nice about now, but there could be worse places to be sitting at 830 in the morning as well....
ok gump. here goes........
Nobe- North beach usually around the 60-80 blocks of collins ave.
vis- an actual look at the waves
breaking fast- a style of funk dance and hip hop dance closely related to popping; see Breakin2 Electric Boogaloo for more info
:)
best post ever! I just spit milk all over my key board!
Homey, would this be considered breaking fast?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQdIiEUFtqk
Epic translations, Homie.
Homey, you should be at the Improv
Thanks for the comic relief to may otherwise non-eventful corporate work week. Awesome. Wishing for waves this weekend.
"walking the board= if you don't take your board for a walk, it will usually pee in the house"
LMAO, that's too damn funny, homey...
Kwak - Sorry to have so much fun at your expense, but since I started this - I'll be nice and clear everything up for you:
"SoBe" is short for South Beach.
Log = longboard, so, like homey said, "loggables" means good for a longboard (but not so much for a shortboard).
Walking the board = a trick done while riding a longboard.
Goofin' around = having fun, trying different maneuvers.
Got it?
~peace!~
