Surfrider South Florida raises over $2000 from Movie Fundraiser

Plug crsurf

It was another sold out show at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens on November 6th when the South Florida chapter of the Surfrider Foundation hosted a double feature surf film night. Their goal was to raise funds for their campaigns to protect public beach access and educate the community on water pollution issues. The opening film was Echo Beach, a tribute to the birth of the surf industry in Newport Beach, California. The main feature was Spectacular Adventures, a montage showcasing east coast pros surfing around the world. Surfrider volunteers prepared and served delicious organic dinners for the guests while Barefoot Wines and Kona Beers donated the beverages. Many other volunteers were key for the success of the event, which has been held semiannually for the last three years. The latest event had the most raffle prizes to be won, including a new surfboard from Catch A Wave Surf Shop and a complete skateboard from Quiksilver Surf Shop. Other prizes were donated by: Island Water Sports - North Miami Beach, Liquid Tube Surf Shop, F1rst Surf Shop, Kulchashok Music, Jordan Kaplan Chiropractor, Cyclus, and CR Surf Travel Co. Reycling containers were provided by Rescue Earth. For more information on Surfrider's upcoming events and opportunities to get involved, visit - www.surfrider.org/southflorida. You can also find the chapter on Facebook along with photos from the evening. (search 'Surfrider SoFla')

I got the day off tomorrow...hoping it picks up again at SOBE tomorrow...don't feel like driving too far.

Pete's picture

Sobe- Hard to say most of the swell energy will be from the NE . There will be a North component but the low has to move out to sea a bit for it to pan out.  When in doubt drive upcoast. Last report for me, whoo hoo CR bound.  Cr surf and Wyatt still around for a few days and will keep things rolling.

Enjoy

Pete get some pics, hav a gd trip, I remeber surfing pavones in 85 with my bro, when the electricity was run by generators on the only htel there. Ad a bad night cause of scorpions everywhere for those 5 days we were there. Back then the most people we saw were 5 at the point.

gosurfeen's picture

Barely ridable in NPB, St. Lucie has a chest high east swell and 1st peak has shoulder high sets. None of it is really orgainzed, but there are plenty of waves to ride.

Have an awesome trip, Pete!

~peace!~

NW winds 23-28 knts for over 12 hours so far on cape canaveral. Looking good.

Hey All,
New to the forum, not to SFL. Moved to Mia 13 years ago from PR. Home break, was La Ocho in San Juan. Anyone traveling down there, I'll be happy to help with info.
Looking forward to another winter season. Missed out last year due to the birth of young blood number 3. All back to normal now, I guess and looking to get back in the water as much as possible. I've done most of my surfing here in Palm Beach and Broward and spend a lot of time at HH.
Toes to the Nose!!

very chilly in AM , bring your rubbers kids.

phinedays's picture

on my way..

TheRealTruth's picture

Just did a visual about 20 mins ago at 1st street. Less than knee high and unridable. Head upcoast!.

Been watching the south beach cam and seeing more sets push through. Several guys out. Judging by the guys in the water the sets look easily waist high. Reports from the beach always appreciated!

phinedays's picture

Just got out... sobe nice nice waist high for sure. The real truth was fibbing. Ironic yeah?

Gonna try to get outta work early today. Hope that it's gonna stick around for a bit..

TheRealTruth's picture

Just got to my desk. Surfed southern palm beach chest to head and fun.
Phinedays- it was knee high at 520AM. Were you there? I didn't see any two foot midgets surfing in the dark....

phinedays's picture

I was in the water by 6 and it was already waist. I'm pretty sure I saw you leaving no? I was walking out on the phone and you were walking back in wasn't that you? Who care anyway glad you had a good time in SPB I wish I had the time this morning to have headed up.

kshane's picture

just got back from surfing with CRSurf. Great morning. Didnt want to leave, but work was calling.
I have never seen more people in a good mood at South, ever. People were smiling, laughing and howling like a bunch of kids. It was great to see.

Surfed south from 8:30 to 11:00 am. Super fun conditions solid waist plus on the sets with some barrel sections to be had as well. Hope it will stay around for the afternoon session. Stoked.

Does anyone know have a report from this afternoon?

(To introduce myself: I'm a beginner surfer who's moved to Miami for a year or so for work. I live in South Beach and want to try to get out as much as I can before my year is up!)

Nx head out now, cams still look as good as they did earlier. Offshores with clean waist highs are rare here. Don't crowd, pick a sand bar and have fun. I'm heading to sobe now.

Size had really droped a couple hours ago when I got out around 1. More in the knee high range, inside probably most ridable. Coming up on high tide could be a factor. Anyone got a more updated visual?

Thanks for the advice. I've been basically walking up the beach until the crowds run out and surfing away from everyone else. Can't head out yet though--although I've gotten a lot done at work, I still can't really leave before 4 (and even that's leaving early).

xavi's picture

Pete- Have fun. Yeah Pavones... I caught that as well 10+ years ago on a incredible swell. Broke all the way thru the restaurant (only building there at that time) although I hear it is more built out these days. Great wave when working. Good for you-well deserved. As for the rest of us it looks as if we will be having fun again this weekend. LIke I said before poseidon is taking good care of us after the summer letdown. Upcoast for me tomorrow again. Later all...

C.Leon's picture

not super excited about tomorrow. fat tide in the am and winds shifting side-shore when the tide drops out.

PanamaD's picture

I haven't seen it this pretty down south in a while. Super clean waist high sets NMB there were some close outs though but if you got on the shoulder there were some nice rides to be had. What agreat way to end the week. Hoping for dawn patrol tomorrow.

Mr W.'s picture

npbc after wrk session was off the hook Solid over head sets on the outside breaking down the beach like freight trains . Wow this swell has blown up since am. Tomorow is gonna be huge. Pick your spot wisely and eat your wheeties.

littlewahine's picture

surfed houses from 1-4..was about knee to waist and very clean lefts..perfect for the longboard. it got a little smaller and less consistent as time went on. Want to do dawn patrol tomorrow before work but with the high tide in the AM and not being able to drive very far from dania i dont know if it'll be worth wakin up early :/ it seemed like the swell was on its way out for south broward too

What are the chances this event hangs around until tomorrow morning? Very fun today ... not thinking it is going to hang around though.

PanamaD's picture

Fat tide was still holding enough action this late afternoon, so if that is any indication, and with some reports calling for a slightly bigger swell, it's not looking bad for tomorrow. i'm definitely up for dawn patrol.

I'm assuming some of you scored at south this afternoon. 4 till dark stomach to shoulder plus and clean.

HH from 4 till dark was super fun. waist to stomach/chest. long lefts..hoping for s'more in the AM..shoulda skipped work today...

Mr W.'s picture

With the large size of this swell expect it to push its way through high tide in AM. NW winds in AM making for awsome conditions. Hit it! this is what we all wait for.

sobe. When someone posts good vibes at sobe, you know there are good waves for all. Clean, manicured lefts and rights waist plus. Rare that it's this good.

Enjoy,

I didn't know what to expect but SoBe was surprisingly good late afternoon. Surfed 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and it held fine through high tide until right at dead high when it slowed down quite a bit. Stomach to shoulder plus and way fun. Saw one guy get a stand-up tube. Crowded, but otherwise a great session. Looks like it should hold, too.

~peace!~

PanamaD's picture

Clean knee to waist in NMB, super tide making it a bit mushy but there's definitely a swell in the water. Might be better in a few hours.

gosurfeen's picture

Miami is good all over, so no need to drive.  NPB is overhead with lot of drift and a shark attack yesterday.  The girl will be o.k. though.

PanamaD's picture

Seems to be getting better now with the outgoing tide. Surfed early am with wyatt and two other guys NMB lots of fun out there, go get some. Waist highs with your occasional chest to shoulder sets.

kshane's picture

surfed from 10-12 at Sobe. Near 1st was packed and stacked. Lots of nice lefts further up, but mostly closeouts. If you were right on the shoulder it was nice. I actually caught a small wave going out (on my belly of course) as I was paddling back out. That was the oddest feeling, being propelled back out by a small wave.

Othewise, it is an absolutely beautiful day out there. Lots of trash washing up and on the beach. Be sure to grab some on your way back to your car.

Cheers,
shane

C.Leon's picture

Surfed sobe down by the jetty from eight thirty am to one pm. Saw Ron k And others get many gorgeous shacks. If u were down by the jetty u know how good it was. If u are at home reading this go surf.

xavi's picture

WOW... Got to Juno at 8:30 and it was BIG but the left was kind of closing out. Took a chance and headed SOUTH to Delray where I found perfection. Surfed from 10-12: sets where easily overhead, lined up, and throwing. Had some great rides-steep drops and fast. Just awesome. Later all!

Mr W.'s picture

Word on the street all of PB is over head and some spots working perfectly while others slam you around and close out. I got one of those yesterday . My thigh looks like a colorful map of the Indian ocean  from the great bruise I got from landing on my board in a tube closeout. Taking it easy today. Waves for next few days.

xavi's picture

Just did a quick check-more of the same tomorrow perhaps even bigger-not sure about wind but looks good. Whatever we are doing let's keep doing it. Go see your grandma, walk the dog, read to year kids etc. Good collective Karma! LOL. Great October and November. Rides still in my head:)

C.Leon's picture

did anyone surf the incoming tide at south. curious to hear reports.

Surfed South this afternoon by the jetty from 2:30 to about 5:30. Was waist + until about 4:00pm and in the chest+ range after 4:00. Nice punchy peaks ... good vibe in the water.

Bonzai's picture

Surfed Juno Pier from about 11am till sunset. A few feet overhead on the drops with a vicious current. Basically, catch a wave, come in, paddle back out along the pier....repeat all day. Did I say that the current was vicious?!
Pics to be posted later tonight if you are interested....
See you guys at SoBe tomorrow.

Mr. B's picture

A stronger pulse hit South around 12:30 and lasted 45 minutes or less.  Overhead bombs were coming thru.  Too bad it was short lived.  I'm sure a few shots will pop up from that period.

Did you get any from nov 3 saturday???

C.Leon's picture

i am sure there are a few shots of me from around that time of day blowing some nice overhead barrels lol. aw man. my energy level at that point was non existent.

ZAP's picture

STOKED for everyone!!! Mr W, word on street accurate for palm beaches, overhead big on various sets all day. mostly lefts walling up, didn't really tube, some rare shoulder rights. if u got closed out u were burried. i went to 2 diff spots & had a bttr morn session from 10 to 12. late session from 2 to 5 not as good, NW winds blew a bit harder, sorta chopping up the sets & big faces. truth be told, i'm sure my fatigue played a role too. haha. heard South was fun too. i think i'm staying local down south manana. great day today

I was out at South from 3:30 till dark. Way too crowded, and lots of lulls until around 5 when the crowd thinned out some and it finally kicked in and really picked up. Chest to shoulder plus with some punch. Last hour was lots of fun. Hope everybody got wet!

~peace!~

El Cache's picture

Mr B, I told everyone around noon time it was throwing HARD

xavi's picture

El Cache and Mr. B- I can attest to that pulse yesterday but from a different location (delray). Anyhow looks like there will be definitely some swell in the water again today. Wanted to share a good story from yesterday: Soon after I caught my best wave yesterday (lucky as I was sitting outside and a bomb rolled in-from that pulse) a kid no older that 15 paddled up next to me with a smile from ear to ear. I nodded to him and smiled at which point he said this is awesome. We parted ways but I had a feeling that he was just stoked to be out there on a big day. A little while later as I was leaving he walked past me again on the beach with the same smile from ear to ear and said "I did not catch any waves-too big for me" at which point I thought to myself- Oh yes you did little fellow- and told him if he kept it up he soon will be catching some. Great to see a kid so happy-after all it is what is all about. To all-have fun today... Later boyz

C.Leon's picture

I heard it's waist high at sobe right now

call is knee high at south, go north

phinedays's picture

two peaks fifty cats on it. knee/thigh maybe a waist high wave every few mins but not worht it at all...IMHO

El Cache's picture

Just got out of water in CPB, waves are head high+, and still offshore

Mr W.'s picture

Still plenty of surf out there. Watch out for sharkies they are out there chasing the mullet. Looks like on eperson had the misfortune of running into one Friday afternoon.

Town of Palm Beach was 5-7 foot glassy faces with long rides this morning. It actually increased in size from yesterday, and organized more in to 3-4 wave sets that would roll in about every 5 minutes. The outside section was a long wall followed by a pitching inside section perfect for attempting the barrel. Best surf I've seen in at least 6 months. Hopefully it sticks around for the evening session.

I hope someone got some photos

More and more surf in the forecast.

Anything left at south this afternoon?

Bonzai's picture

Scored offshore Miami sandbar 3 feet this afternoon with light offshores....perfect lefts rolling in. 2 small sharks were icing on the cake. Looking forward to going back during full moon.

The more you know, the less you need...

Wow that sounds pretty nice..offshore sandbar? I take it you were able to surf pretty much alone. We have be pretty happy we got to surf 3 days in a row and it was a glassy N swell.I cant remember the last time I was able to surf 3 days in a row at SB. I think it was back in the mid 80's. Unfortunatley today I had to cut my surfing a bit short...stepped on some glass walking back for a water break...Damn Partyers!!! Anyways..Lets start seeing some pics up....Palm beaches I heard were firing today!

littlewahine's picture

this has been some of the funnest waves ive surfed down here in years! going up coast tomorrow hope i find some good stuff to end my 4 day surf session :) glad everyone got some!

C.Leon's picture

I heard an offshore reef I know about was breaking as well.

I saw two guys taking photos south of first street at sobe on Saturday. If anyone knows where those pics are, let us know. Thanks.

Mr. B's picture

Blackberry visual from Delray today - taken around 1:30  This was a smaller set - shoulder high

oceanridge's picture

Here are some quick snaps I took in PB, just prior to paddling out for the dusk session. Sorry for the poor quality and these pics do not really show the quality of the surf. The swell seems to be holding. Sets were still over-head.

C. Leon, that was me with the baby stroller and the Canon taking pics. I have a bunch to rifle through before posting. I know I got a great sequence of Shayne busting an air.

Small but fun waves this morning down at South.

Mr W.'s picture

This evening Central PBC north end was still over head on the sets. Some monsters came through that made you scrape for the outside . So size isn't letting up yet. Lot of sharks in the water too. One 7ft 'er jumped out between two folks. Long lefts to be had by all ! Uncrowded too.

C.Leon's picture

.

C.Leon's picture

If I busted airs, I am confident that Shayne pulled of some impressive stuff. Scary sharks

C.Leon's picture

i found some pics of juno and palm beach on surfxtc.com

Great to see evryone caught good waves. In Pavones right now with Josue , Mike and >Lou. LOu took some really great pics this morning.  Cr surf meeting up with us tomorrow then Wyatt.  Really good South swell

El Cache's picture

Still gd waves in NCPB, waves are solid chest to head+ on sets. Wind is light NW to NNW @5-10 about an hour ago.

Forgive me if this sounds silly...I'm pretty passive in the water. I catch my share of waves and all, but I'm not aggressive. I'm very comfortable in the water at HH and the local Miami spots. I would like to venture up coast and check out some of the areas north of the Bahamas blockage. I don't need to be in the prime spots where I know lots of ya'll go when it's good up there. I guess my question is, is when you get past the Bahamas blockage on a weekend like we've just had down here, is there something to ride on pretty much any beach, where I can just paddle out with whoever I ride up with, and not get into any localism issues? Like I said, I don't have the need to be in "the spots"...just curious if it breaks all along there...close outs, whatever... no bother..

xavi's picture

beachfins- Your best bet is to do the work yourself as that is part of the fun. Look PBC will most likely always have the goods so you really do not need to drive much further north than PBC. Having said that I can tell you NOT to surf Lakeworth if you are worried about locals. Some waves like Delray don't really work well unless the swell is running shoulder high as it tends to close out imo. You can make Delray your starting point and work your way northbound on AIA and you will find other spots-just cannot disclose them here. NPBC has many options as well and the vibe is pretty cool as long as you know what you are doing and respect the locals. Hope that helped-that is how I did it myself in case you are wondering-surfed a break and then drove for an hour or two just tyring to get an idea of other spots. Eventually you will have a pretty good idea as to what breaks work better in certain swell directions and wind conditions. I hope this helped...

As for the rest of the week looks pretty good still in PBC for those who can make it! Swell on tap all friggin week long. I am far from a forcaster but the sites I rely on-and called it perfectly this weekend- are showing swell well into the weekend.

Later all

PanamaD's picture

Beachfins, I agree with Xavi. And if you can avoid lake worth pier, do. I've surfed there very few times and although the waves were good and no one really messed with me, the vibe
In the water was nasty, enough to make it almost unenjoyable. Sometimes I think people forget why they start surfing in the first place.

Appreciate the info. I was certainly not expecting anyone to give up any info besides exactly what you told me, which was what I was looking for. I love surfing with the older guys at HH, but don't dig the vibe so much on the north side of the inlet. Pretty interesting how 2 places so so close to one another can throw off completely different feelings.
Cheers!!
