Pete; when, where, and what time?
This Friday starting at 7 pm (first entry and food gets dished out) . First movie at 7:45 pm. All taking place at the beautiful Miami Beach botanical Gardens. Just the raffle will be worth the entry. You can buy tics online at the above link . Its going to have a semi 80's retro feel so feel free to wear 80's stuff. I'm looking for my OP corduroy shorts and Sundeck T. If anyone has 80's era South beach fotos please email them to me at peteferrer@hotmail.com More interested in shots of the surrounding area (like Chicken shack, the pier, Rolo's and all the crew) I found a few including shots of Red with his big Mane, Picon brothers, ham, fat , Jack Gavilan and the miami springs crew. I would like to put up a poster board of that era.
The online tickets sales took a jump over the weekend and sales are now brisk. I guess peoples plans are like a long range forecast, closer you get to the day the more accurate it is. We've had to turn folks away in the past, which we hate to do, but we're getting heat from the Garden for overcrouding. Fire Marshel gets pissed too. So get your tickets on line for will call or get there early.
Funny how we always get waves around event time.
peace and progress!
nice event!, I would probably hang around. BTW whats that forming down in central america?? what are the changes to something like that hit here?
The Surfrider party looks to be the beginning of a great weeking that includes some decent surf, albeit windchop.
See you all there!
Surf chop-o-rama, then go to a movie event, drink cold brew and eat delicious food with South Florida's finest group of misfits? And it all benefits the very beaches we surf at? Easy call. See ya'll at the flic!
Mr. B - I put your WindFinder link in the "Wave Forecast Links" menu on the right side. Nice to get a forecast of 20+ mph winds for four days at 87th St.
= BIG CHOP !!!
Hot chop is better than cold chop. Enjoy the warm weekend before it is wetsuit time.
Last event was great. My wife won a board and I also won a nice price in the raffle.
Food, drinks and movie all real good.
Great cause, see you Friday.
Thanks, CR. Looks like the wind situation is only getter better with time. We're in for NE/E 20-30 knots this weekend! The Marine forecasts upped it's calculations too
And going all the way thru Tues. Another shot of NE winds next week as well. Waves, waves, waves. Sloppy but we'll be in ridables range for some time.
East winds towards the weekend, which is really good for us at south beach, big chunky east chop, with god's prayers. Will keep the masses out of the water. like pete said it could be a week of straight surf in miami, with warm water. God Bless! This is the biggest game of the year for the Phins on Sunday. And Pete I'm coming with an appetitie.
Wildcat, that was a great score your wife got last year. Considering how few raffle tickets get sold period, people's chances of winning are much higher than they think. Best odds you will ever see.
We have another 6'4" Board with fins, trac pad and leash up for grabs. We also have a sweet longboard skateboad too!
See ya'll at the event!
What's the word on Ida for next week? Looks like Tuesday might be decent on the West Coast.
Looks like there is motion in the ocean, cams show it building quickly. Any visuals from south?
should be waves soon
Deerfield cam showing some rideables!
Just checked South almost ridable.
Just back from sobe. Slop-n-chop in the water. A few good rides here and there, more of a workout than anything, but it was getting better when I left.
I was on a log, FYI.
knee high, drifty and choppy.
With this tropical system moving North and increasing our pressure gradient it also improves opur chances for a wind turn more SE. Not a bad thing for us.
JUST LIKE PETE SAID, WE COULD SEE SOME GOOD SE CHOP!

Forecast updated: Nov 5, 2009 5:08 PM EST
Winds a blowin'! It's starting amigos. Cache thanks for that man, pretty thorough
Fun chop started. PM surf was fun in the waist-high range, with a few bigger drops as the tide started back in. Best part of the evening was when I got back to the car, I found that the meter-maid got me. Not funny, but the fact that I had been using the same parking slip since Sept, I find hilarious! F#@k 'em : ) Glad to pay them their measly 18 bucks! Don't even know why I find it funny...
Can't wait for it to get bigger more funky!!!
Josue, were you at sobe?
Allison and I got tagged by Officer J. Lee, too.. That's $54 in a few minutes!... Damn.. shoulda paid that dollah.
~G
Hey 18 bucks is much better than the $30 bucks you get at Delray, it's ridiculous, the one time I decide to go there I get nailed! Who has $5 in quarters? Josue that one worked for me for a while too.
The dude was out at HH today too, giving parking tickets..
Another reason to bike to surf....no worries for parking pirates.
The more you know, the less you need...
Check out this cool video by Jack O'neill. He has an amazing program named Sea Odessey that helps protect the enviornment in Northern California. Really gives you chills on how beautiful and special Northen Cal is: http://magicseaweed.com/video/flvplayer.php?id=485.
Bonzai, what happens when someone breaks the lock on your bike and steals it?
Fowey Light is honking - NE 26-27 knots
Let the festivities begin!
Amazingly enough, it seems 25knt + winds are not enough to create waves down here. SB is knee to thigh and disorganized. I didn't even bother checking it when I got there thinking it would be at least waist to chest, got my board went down to the beach, looked at it for a few minutes and walked back to my car.....dry shorts and board in hand. Sucks.
Don't bother unless you have absolutely nothing to do.
Awesome Video Cache, Jack Oneill rocks. I saw his house a few weeks ago. Santa Cruz area is way ahead of us in term of ecologically minded people.
Thanks truth, I'm sure things will pick up later.
It appears as if you have answered your own rather extreme question.
The more you know, the less you need...
Any HH visuals?
SB is extremely disorganized. Much different than the E chop we had a couple weeks ago. Hopefully some form will develop this weekend.
BTW have any of you experienced the new "localism" going on at Ft. Pierce N.Jetty lately? I had heard about it a few weeks ago from a buddy who lives in PSL. One of his boys got his nose broken for talking back to some loud mouth in the water. I actually experienced it first hand last Sunday. I was with a group of 4 guys from Miami just surfing the 2nd peak when this loud mouth skinny redneck starts yelling at us to het the f*ck out of the water. Calling us spics and saying "andale, andale" saying that we "miami" boys were crazy if we thought we were going to surf that peak. We were all minding our own business. No one cut anyone off. This was just out of the blue. My buddies and a few other dudes started paddling north to surf the next peak over. I kinda held my ground because the guy was really getting on my nerves. Then as I glance to my right to get a good look...he's still talking shit and three pretty big rednecks fully inked up start paddling towards me. At that time I figured it was smart to just paddle north. I didnt drive 2 hours north to fight a group of ignorant dickheads. BTW it was the best thing that happened to us because we had a better peak all to ourselves.
Be Aware next time you go up. These guys respresent the total opposite of what surfing is. Its not like FT Pierce is a frekin secret spot or anything. Ive been surfing there since 1993 and never experienced something like that.
Anyone have eyes on SOBE now? Cam is stuck on an image from yesterday.
See ya'll at the movie tonight!
I was there, I've never seen that kind of hatred and racism in the water, for no apparent reason. I think his exact words were "Si señor, Si señor", after telling all "spics" to get the f*ck away from the peak. He even called out one of the guys specifically. He's definitely surfing for the wrong reasons.
I must admit however, that the only other place I've seen that kind of attitude (without the racism) is here at SB, back in the days when Ham and those guys roamed the waters during good swells.
The same way we go up to catch swells that are blocked by the Bahamas, they come south to catch the ones that have extreme N angles and only break from Palm Beach south. The point is for everyone to catch some waves when there are some to be had, not be selfish when you're spot is one of the few offering the goods. As long as the locals are respected, I don't see a problem.
those guys are ignorants, they don't event know the difference between different Latin nationalities, and they don't even see how friendly are the people in other countries like mexico, Costa Rica, etc when they travel ... No body wants to fight, but we let them do it, they are going to do it more. I don't really understand why is localisms in Florida where the waves are small and crappy most of the time.
1s company, 2s a crowd....
If I guy breaks your nose in the water, you call the cops, have him arrested, press charges and then mention the "latino" comments made and it becomes a hate crime. A few calls like that and people start to settle down or go to jail.
Oh how I wish it were that easy.
I overheard the story of the perpetrator in the parking lot at South the other day (he punched the other guy). I'm not going to judge what is right or wrong but going to other spots and punching someone in the face is not exactly going to sit well with the crew. Unfortunately there is no easy way to settle this one. The Ft P crew are fierce and protective . Only time will allow things to pass (like the severe localism at Lake (snake) Worth in the late 80's and 90's.
I made a few poster boards of pics of South at different time frames (70's 80's and 90's )
Check them out tonight. its a blast from the past.
I've been in fist fights before at South. And it was usually on those 'epic' nor'east slop chop days. 1 is a company and 2 is a crowd for sure, and that goes for the way fights in the line up normally happen, whether here or upcoast. Nobody can talk about their problems first, they bring their posse over. One vs. many, not a dignified way to show your macho-ism. I have to say, though, I have surfed with some of the most respectful people at South and elsewhere in Florida. There will always be kooks anywhere you surf, I guess.
I'm with Pete on this. If the guy from South punched the other guy in the face - what the hell kind of reaction would you expect from the locals? Certainly they were not going to be kind after that - but would you have deserved their kindness anyway? I don't condone aggression, but certainly in their minds you deserved to be run off.
I have friends up the coast, and Miami surfers have a reputation for being jerks to begin with, due to their actions - and this kind of behavior doesn't help to remedy that reputation at all. You get back what you put out there, yes?
Bonzai - Don't use a cable lock (easily cut), don't use a cheap U-lock (easily twisted), and don't ever lock your bike up to a tree (they've been known to cut them down to get the bike). And check any poles you lock up to - some of them pull out of the ground and the thieves know which ones).
Wind has been blowing out of the N.E. at over 20 mph for 24 hours and ???
~peace!~
I surfed there sat. and sun. had no problems but i surf there so much im sure they think i live there.
waves sucked at south this morning
should I take a look at south shayne? Im heading in like an hour, might just go straight to a wind blocker..
i surfed there on sunday as well. didnt have any problems but i have gotten some "miami boy" comments at reef rd. you just gotta ignore them and let ur surfing do the talking. by the end of the session i ended up bullshitting with the hecklers. give off positive vibes and hopefully they come back to you.
whats the report for sobe? i have been working non stop all week, barely seen the sun.
When I get some stickers done for the DCS site (K-shane??) we can put them on our boards and look out for each other in the water. I'm not a violent guy, but when someone is a racist dickhead, they deserve to have their asses kicked. I would be glad to lead a crew up there and see what's up..
But if I'm driving that far, might as well hit up Sebastian Inlet or Sat. Beach to surf the rocks. And I'm usually I'm too lazy to drive, so I sit with the friendly pack at SB or HH and take turns.
Just surfed south, surprisingly crappy! It's ridable but dont expect to much.
did not have much size when i was there so i dont think hh would be any better
how big was it Ibis
I've been surfing reef road area for years and there have been cases of guys from Miami coming in there and thinking they own the place. They drop in on others and such. There were some particular spongers that really got under peoples skin not to mention dropped under peoples waves. Those type of guys give others from Miami a bad name. I have nothing against anyone surfing my home breaks but just show respect that all. You show respect , you will get respect.
Raulprsb
Surfed ft pierce Sunday too, had no problems but some of my friends from Miami did with the "si senor" comments, and all the BS I heard was coming out of that guys mouth.
I was closer to the jetty, had a friendly good crowd session, no one was agro...
Let’s set the story straight, the guy that got punched and got his nose broken on the previous swell was a guy from port st Lucie, and the aggressor a guy from Ft. Pierce.
No one from Miami punched anyone. Wanted to clarify that one before Miami gets a worst rap.
ANY VISUALS FOR SOUTH?
Can you still buy tickets at the door to tonights event? Not sure if I have a baby sitter so I cant buy them online as of yet.
Violence is the answer to all problems, so is drinking lots of alcohol or other drugs. If you don’t know how to fight just slash some tires when you get back to shore. J/K
Better get there early if you want to make sure you can get a ticket. We hate turning people away, but it happens every year.
Hope to see you there.
s
Waves suck today, but kiteboarding's been great! Look forward to another session, then a nice surf/kite combo tomorrow.
Life is good!...
Pretty sad how the localism crap comes around again, and it's usually one punk-ass as opposed to a "posse". The only place and the closest I've ever come to an altercation in the water was at Reef Rd. And with whome? A lakeworth Pier local convinced that he owns the beach. Mind my own business, sitting patiently afor a nice set. Probably had let 15 waves go by before I even thought of catching one to make sure everyone's got theirs and he has to get pissed because I catch a decent one. So in his opinion, that warranted a slap in the back of my head. That was a long time ago, but it always left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth about LW locals. Sad thing is, a bunch of them are really cool cats and fun to surf with, but there's always going to be a sourpuss in the gang.
Knee+ high, it was ridable on anything, short, fish, or longboard. Just crappy, if you are in the right place though you may catch a fun 1 or 2. I will proably go back out here shortly, might as well. If you blink though you might miss the wave, very short rides.
Wrong , someone from Miami punched out a local . I heard it from his mouth . Must be separate incidents. My bro Rod and Jay surf the Pierce the other day. They had no problems . Then again Jay is so friendly he'll say hi to the starfish. Def good vibes take you further.
Agree with you Mr W. there are a bunch of asshole South Americans that bring bad attitudes (Yea i'm from SA Too). Just the driving in Miami tells a story.
Everything set for the event. Bring hunger cuz we will fill youz. First with food then with Beer or wine. No funneling allowed.
CarlosV , You have been a contributor so if you get there and we sell out see me. As for everyone else ,better buy a tic.
Like Mr. W mentioned above, if you show respect you get respect.
No matter how good you surf, you should always show respect to others, specially when surfing somewhere that is not your local break. I don't remember seeing Wardo cut anybody off during Wilma in 05', and he was the best surfer by far out in the water. I remember back in the mid 90's surfing 1st peak at Seb Inlet and Slater paddled out, he obviously caught some of the best waves, but he also let some go by for the locals to catch and hooted them on (it was a really fun day, head high and clean). At one point we were paddling for the same set wave and I asked him if he was going, he said no, so I went. I have asked other surfers/locals that same question and sometimes been ingnored. From my viewpoint, if the best surfer in the world can show respect to a bodyboarder like myself, then so can everyone else show respect towards each other, no matter what you're riding.....short board, long board, sup, bodyboard, whatever...no excuses.
Can someone please explain why the winds although being over 22+ for 24 hours are making such small waves locally? We should be getting better waves?!?! I was just really surprised today and don't get why its not better? Just poor sand bars or some other complicated $hit i dont get? Thanx
GLos
GLos, yea we should be getting better waves, but its messed up. In my experience, NE wind chop usually sucks. Tomorrow should have better size. If not Sunday will be good. NWS says 25 to 30 from the east.
A MIAMI LOCAL PUNCHED OUT A REDNECK AT FT PIERCE? SWEEEEET! I AM SO SICK OF THESE WHITE TRASH LOSERS IN FLORIDA. RIGHT ON I SAY. I HOPE IT HAPPENS MORE OFTEN. THESE SCUM SUCKING LOW BROW WHITE TRASH LOSERS DESERVE WHATEVER THEY GET. BEST NEWS SINCE YANKEES WON!!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!! REDNECK LOCALS ARE THE SCUM OF FLORIDA!!!!
Hey man, don't hold back, tell me what you really feel! Yesterday evening, mid mb was small until the tide started coming in. Seeing thigh early then waist towards nightfall. Windchop means peaky lines. If you are in the spot to get a peak, then it's a good ride with a couple turns. Otherwise it's a closeout. Polite crowd out there though. That was a nice change.
Alright Mr locals suck dude. You made your point but any more racist posts and you will be deleted. That goes for others as well. Now lets talk surf.
On another note, thanks to everyone who came out last night for the movie event. A good time was had by all.
It was nice to go to the movie event...I hadn't been to one of those in ages!!!! Great hospitality and a great bunch of people.
Hopefully I can make it to more of those events...Keep up the great work!!
On surf....looks like the winds are more easterly today. Hopefully, that should improve the quality of the chop for us...Any Visuals?
Pete's food was off the hook, as always. Everyone had a good time, and a lot of new friends were made. Best quote of the night... guy walking out of the movie with his girlfriend, "F-ck that makes me want to surf so bad right now!" Girlfriend's reply, "F-ck yeah!"
Thanks Shane, a lot of work goes into it. F--ck lets go surf.
Anyone check HH lately??
Visuals for sobe?
sobe in the morning was slop-o-rama. Messy chest plus wind chop. Probably the same right now.
Just got out of the water at South Beach...Chest high chunky chop with occassional bigger drops.
Funner that it looks from the beach but be prepared to paddle....strong winds felt ENE.
http://www.oneill.com/cwc/california/webcast
Surf's up Miami Beach... Pick your peaks. occ. head high bombs rolling thru but most is stomach - shoulder .. very choppy. brutal winds, rip, etc.. lots of close outs. Rockin' a quad fish. Might get good as the tide goes out. When in doubt don't paddle out.
HH was fun earlier and seemed to be getting a bit more organized when I got out. Was in the water from 9 till about 11...washing machine, chunky, lots o water, but some fun ones coming thru and connecting on the inside...
i was at HH at sunrise & didn't paddle out. way too windy & messy for my taste. guys out though getting a short sloppy ride every once in awhile. maybe i should have waited but doubt it would have improved in my opinion
Hey zap I surfed HH early this morning and it was good for a while, just felt too tight with the crowd later on and seemed to be getting sloppier on the high tide so I bailed. Good vibes out there even when crowded, just a buch of stoked surfers. I'd say it was worth my 5:30 trek to the beach.
C-Shapes, thanks for the nose job, the board's looking great.
Surfed sobe at midtide outgoing. It was chest high with some bigger bombs. I haven't seen south beach that heavy in a while. It felt good to get rocked. Hopefully it will be more organized tomorrow morning.
Great to surf with CRSurf, Pete and the rest of the gang. Surfed 2:30 - 4:30 at HH. Fun ones coming thru in the chest/shoulder and certainly plus drops. Clened up with the outgoing tide. Fun waves overall.
Crowd factor = high
Stoke factor = higher
Guess it was good to surf the home break again, but it was definitely a mess....Couple of short fun rides but other than that more work than fun! Hopefully tomorrow am will be slightly better..
Watched a HH "Local" throw his Corona beer can on the floor and keep walking. Bad karma man, thats your home break.
If you read this, you know who you are.
Extreme localism is uncalled for. Having said that I have never had a problem upcoast. My basic rule is to always travel solo, recognize the locals in the lineup, establish yourself with a good ride or two, and mind your own business. Having said that I have seen people ripped or humiliated and it sucks for them. As far as localism goes it could be much worse: there is an island in the indian ocean-forget the name in which locals wear black trunks-if you are not wearing one-you can forget about catching a wave. I am sorry to hear about it ER-seems like you can hold your own. Seems like the event was great congrats all who made it happen. My plate is full these days so the free time i get i save it for the h20. Later boyz....
Tropical storm Isa is gonna kep us ridable maybe till untio next saturday, and thing could get interesting toward the later part of the week.
Looks like IDA has cheated every forecast and is soon to become a CAT 2 storm.
We are far from over with this wind/wave event and you can already start planning the next one.
WAM Models are hinting towards a strong low - could be IDA moving out to see off the FL/GA coast mid next week and cranking up the seas/swell into the 12 foot+ range for So. Fl.
See you all (and your parents and grandparents...) in the water later today
IsThe surf any more organized than it was yesterday?
Crowded chest plus chop with rip and howling wind. Threading the needle between people and pulling back way to often. Not that I need to post this since everyone who reads this was in the water anyway.
Surfed sobe on the incoming. Big chop. Crazy drops. Be safe out there guys.
hey gump152, i'm a garbage picking up pro in a big waterside park, when i see that i yell something weird, tell the person "i got it", and when i pick it up it, i hold it high above my head until i hit garbage can. it's fun.
i think i am going to leave my surfboard at home and try the old boogie in this mess.
