Also a June 5th event - surfing related -

At the Lighthouse Center for the Arts, a gallery and school of art in Tequesta. We have a surfing exhibition opening on June 5th entitled Surfari: The Old and New of Surfing in Florida. We are partnering with the Surf History Project, a group of five Palm Beach surfers who are committed to preserving Florida’s surfing history. You can check them out at http://www.surfhistoryproject.org/. They have a collection of old surfing memorabilia and photographs and are planning to open a surf museum in the future but this is their first exhibition.

Since the Surfrider Foundation is a grassroots movement, I thought you might be interested in the Surf History Project and in this exhibit. The opening reception for Surfari is Friday, June 5th from 5:30 to 7:30. It is open to the public free of charge... Love to have some Surfrider Foundation members/representatives at the opening so spread the word and bring friends!

Contact me with any questions at alex@lighthousearts.org or (561)746-3101.

just curious why no beach cleanup after memorial day weekend? Was there not enough trash?

Mr W.'s picture

Day 5 of Flatness. Still no hope in sight. Anyone up for a Typhoon lagoon road trip party?

kshane's picture

We were waiting for you to organize one. :-P

If I  keep cleaning up my daughters room will that teach her to keep it tidy?

Surfrider is not in the maid/santation business and we want people to learn to respect the beach and clean up after themselves.

We would rather do things that have a lasting, positive, impact on the beach with out limitted time. That's why we have a dune restoration in 2 weeks. Bring your daughters.......sons, mothers, dads, everyone you can.

peace and progress!

osocarras's picture

I clean up after myself kshane. But isn't beach clean ups to help educate people to keep our beach clean and not to pick up after them. That's the point I'm tring to make. It doesn't always have to be picking up trash, how bout redoing the old capt. Planet. Spread the message, keep the beach clean!

Tj's picture

Hmmmm....good points on both sides.  Yet I gotta side with Kshane on this one.  These events don't happen out of thin air and though a beach cleanup sounds like an easy thing - it takes coordination (advertising, bags, up at 6am, get the water, get the ice, haul all this sh*t to the beach, set-up the tent, set-up the flags, set-up the registration, sweat your @ss off, haul it all away, put tent and other stuff back in storage, ----just off thetop of my head).

While kshane abbreviated (which granted Oscar, it came across gruff); long story short it takes people saying "hey, we should do this, tell me what you need me to do to make it happen".

BTW - sold my condo- officially no longer a SoBe'r - hopefully Cocoa is in my future...fingers crossed.

Tj - Where have you been? Good to know you're still alive and kicking!

Wyatt makes a good point. If we keep cleaning up after the litterbugs - they will never learn to do it themselves.

Damn, I hate all this flatness!

~peace!~

kshane's picture

O knows I am jabbin him (I would hope). I agree with Slider, good to know you are still alive. :-)

osocarras's picture

Tj I've been there, I know. Good to know your still around.

Pete's picture

TJ , good to hear from you. Where you living thses days?

pete notice that MONSTER low near the Azores....just sittin out there... can a brotha get a long period small ENE groundswell.......tues afternoon thru thrusday....perhaps jupiter north.....say knee-thigh to occ. waist......

ya ya swell decay....but worth watching the bouy's out around 70W....bc the bouy at 63 west has been picking up a 3.3 13 sec swell from ENE since midnite

also about 400 miles NW of the circulation there is and has been a large fetch of NE winds

I'm good - living up in Pompano Beach for just about a year now - surfin commercial pier, deerfield, ft. lauderdale - mostly workin though.  Lots of travel throughout the Gulf, shrimp fishery improvements in Louisiana, turle long line gear improvements in west Florida, shark protection laws in Texas.

In Tampa as I write this and wakin like for DP in a few hours to drive to Tallahassee then Panama City and back in 1 day!  Learnin tons, pushing my politico skills to knew heights - very rewarding work with Ocean Conservancy.

Pete's picture

Cpick, I was looking at that low on the Maps and marveled at its size. Problem is fetch pointed at us is only in the 25-35knt range and limited in size.  Decay factor would nulify any potential for Central Fla.  Nothing wrong with being hopefull but not from this one.

TJ for Governor then prez

here is a link to some video's I put up.....some surfing, nature...

gosurfeen's picture

Hey Pete, correct me if I am wrong, but it appears that giant low has winds aloft that cover a huge area, but the closed circulation surface winds (the only ones that can generate swell) around the low cover a very small area.  The fetch to the northeast of the low is larger, but the winds aroung the low look to cover a very small area.  Let me know if I am reading it wrong, 'cause I'm only looking at the cloud cover.  That is a five day trip for a swell....

go surf green i am not pete

but the quikscat shows Surface winds......these surface winds 400-500 miles N of the low.....are producing swell.....big swell for the central atlantic................yesterday the windprofile around the storm was like a subtropical system (strongest winds displaced from center).....there was probably a high pressure north of the storm as well strengthening the gradient

i have been watching the bouys since this storm was 1000 miles west of where it is now a couple days ago....(north central atlantic)......and it was sending swell then as well......like pete said swell decay will kill this one....and most of the juice is aimed Well east of here like bouy 41041

Small lines in martin county on the cam.....perhaps from a land far far away

ZAP's picture

flatness - no end in sight. take up skim boarding!!!

pete at what point do you start to get confident that late next week- weekend could get interesting here....

seems like a decent low could make a run at our general area from the south and then perhaps even crawl up and angle in toward the east coast..

Mr W.'s picture

Surprise , surprise its still flat. There is chatter on the coconut wire of a swell formation for late next week. But this can just be another Al Qaeda trick. Sources are interpreting these communications now to see if there is legitimate reason to wax your board.

gosurfeen's picture

You are right.  The long term forecast shows a tropical low over the Bahamas the end of next week, giving us some large wind chop beginning on Thursday.  Could become Anna.  I'm going to give my generator a test run.

Microlines in Mid-MB, ankle to shin - fun for looooongboard or SUP with LT at 1:30ish.

LINK TO LETTER HERE - http://action.lcv.org/campaign/epa_0609

The EPA recently made a significant announcement - global warming pollution poses a serious threat to our public health and welfare. This finding paves the way for reductions in the pollution driving global warming and is an important step in leading America to a clean energy economy.

However, this announcement is not final. The EPA must first solicit public comments on their findings, and we need to flood their docket with statements of support. The deadline to have your voice heard is right around the corner. Will you send an urgent email to the EPA?

Click here to send a message to the EPA supporting their finding that global warming pollutants are dangerous to our health and welfare.

Why is it so critical that you weigh in? Because the EPA is already hearing from allies of Big Oil and Dirty Coal who are spending millions of dollars on lobbying efforts arguing that regulating global warming pollution will be too costly or difficult. We must counter the false allegations of Big Polluters with messages from citizens who know that these harmful pollutants must be reduced.

The good news is the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 was passed out of the House Energy & Commerce Committee recently. This is a historic first step in what promises to be a hard-fought battle to enact comprehensive clean energy and global warming legislation that creates jobs, enhances national security, and protects the planet.

At the same time that Congress moves forward, it is essential that the EPA hears that you support their finding, which sets us on the path to regulate dangerous greenhouse gas pollution. There is no time to waste.

Our opposition is mobilizing as never before, and the deadline for comments is June 23rd – just a few short weeks away! Sending a message to the EPA is a quick, easy way to fight global warming, and it could make all the difference.

Send a message to the EPA now.

For the health of the planet and all its inhabitants, please take action before it’s too late.

Sincerely,

Gene Karpinski
League of Conservation Voters

Intersting setup next week. We may have a low turn into our first storm . Models have it coming off the coast of Honduras , beelining towards Cuba. Too early to really predict if it will be a wave maker but something to keep our eye out on.

Pete's picture

Current track brings a TS going thru Cuba into the GOM.  Strong SE winds starting Thursday. I wouldn't put too much stock into it now.
