"The Future of South Florida surfing"
Looks like we maybe have ridable chop today and better on Tuesday and maybe lasting into Wednesday.
Also our emails to the City and Commission and especially Commissioner Libbin have produced results.
Meeting is this afternoon. Surfrider will represent. This ammendment is to make it easier to enforce litter laws.
Again, keep those emails coming and we may just have clean beaches.
Ana, where are you?
Ana is nowhere to be found.. Neither are 20-25 knot winds any more.
Current track never favored the winds NWS was predicting. Winds have now been downgraded a bit. Still too much uncertainty..
kelly loses at chopes.. I get mad when kelly losses for some reason and even hearing occy asking if he will requalify this year even worse.
Winds or No winds, Storm or no storm. bouys are up a bit already to 4.6ft 8 sec, I'm going surfing tomorow, rain or shine! See ya!!
watchin that fort pierce bouy tuesday for signs of a 30 degree swell headin south from our cold front winds off the carolina's
wether the soon to be subtropical thing gives me anything more than just rain waits to be seen....maybe it could set up in position to give offshore's for a "cross my fingers" nne swell
Things continue to get interesting (and complicated too). Light winds at the moment up the Southern half of our state ranging from E to SE at 5-12 knts. Strong NNE winds (30 knt range)in the upper part of the state and continuing up the Eastern Seaboard well past the Carolinas. These are the winds currently sending us fairly sizable swell measured at 14 ft at 11sec in the upper part of the state to 8-9ft in Canaveral. This may well trickle to Soflo but it remains to be seen if it reaches down South for a Sobe special. Potential is there. Suffice to say everyone should be on red alert today. Latest storm track (or should I say Extra tropical low track) favors it going over the mid to upper part of the state. Trick will be finding the sweet spot where swell exists and cleanup happens. Happy hunting and check back here often.
Buoys are way up, Ft. Pierce is 4.6. Winds are gonna crap this one out unless you have a good eye.
Just wait a day or two.
swell should begin showing in Palm beach county between 10 am - Noon from north to south IMO......it was not the widest fetch of winds so we shall see? but LOTS of potential for some surprise size
two lows are 1(south of keys) and 2(SE) of miami .....and i don't know if they will merge or what but they will probably move west soon
http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/gmex/loop-wv.html (click on fronts) while running the loop
Lots of fun swell, and it's clean right now, all the way down to CPB.
The upcoast swell that started to show in St. Lucie County yesterday afternoon (3' swell, with 2' of local chop on it) is from the low that sat out by Bermuda for a couple days. The fetch on the north side of that low generated the swell, which is in the window for CPB. The new fetch south of Hatteras, extending to the NFL coast is producing some big, shorter period waves for NFL. That fetch will point itself at SFL tonight, so everyone on Florida's east coast can expect some large waves beginning tomorrow. The new maps show most of the gale force winds will be well out to sea, so our local winds should not be more than 25K. If there's a gale out there with a closed circulation, they may name it. Here's this morning's 8:00 a.m. discussion from the NHC in Miami:
THE ATLANTIC OCEAN...
THE WHOLE SCENARIO OF SURFACE LOW PRESSURE CENTERS IS DEVELOPING
COMPARATIVELY MORE AND MORE EACH DAY. A 1010 MB LOW PRESSURE HAS
FORMED IN THE STRAITS OF FLORIDA. A 1010 LOW PRESSURE CENTER
THAT IS FORECAST TO BECOME A GALE CENTER DURING THE NEXT
24 HOURS CURRENTLY IS JUST TO THE WEST OF THE RAGGED ISLAND
RANGE. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS RANGE FROM THE WATERS BETWEEN
ANDROS ISLAND AND SOUTH FLORIDA TO THE NORTHERN BAHAMA ISLANDS...
AND FROM THE TURKS ISLANDS TO LONG ISLAND/RUM CAY/CROOKED ISLAND.
THE SAME DEEP LAYER CENTRAL ATLANTIC OCEAN CYCLONIC CIRCULATION
CENTER IS NEAR 31N52W. A 1013 MB LOW PRESSURE CENTER IS NEAR
31N54W. AN OCCLUDED FRONT EXTENDS FROM THE LOW CENTER TO 34N49W
AND 31N46W. A STATIONARY BOUNDARY IS ALONG 31N46W 22N50W 18N60W
18N65W. A WARM FRONT CONTINUES FROM 18N65W...TO NORTHEASTERN
PUERTO RICO...TO THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMA ISLANDS TO THE RAGGED
ISLAND RANGE 1010 MB LOW PRESSURE CENTER. ISOLATED MODERATE
SHOWERS ARE WITHIN 15 NM TO 30 NM ON EITHER SIDE OF THE
STATIONARY FRONT AS UPPER LEVEL ANTICYCLONIC FLOW CUTS ACROSS
THE TOP OF THE AREA OF THE FRONT.
Small lines showing on the PB cams. While the winds haven't made it yet into either Canaveral buoy, St. Auggie is showing some serious gale force N/NE winds. As it's been said here already, the race is on between waves vs. winds. (as of 8:00am buoy 41012 was registering 31.1 knots gusting to 40.8 knots with 15.1 foot seas @ 11 sec's) My best guesstimate is surf the PB's - swell should really show around 1:00pm today in that area - but it's pure speculation on my part. Not sure if it will hit MIA since it usually takes N/NW winds to "thread the needle". Again, I could be totally wrong and we're blessed with a mid/late afternoon surprise. I'd pay close attention today and tomorrow...
Update: as of 10:00am, 2nd reef at RR is already breaking which means at least shoulder/head high in that area.
Surf keeps increasing in CPB, and right now even Boca has a waist high plus, halfway clean, groundswell.
The swell is now building down in boca.......
light winds what a afternoon
look at the way the canaveral bouys jacked up last nite at 10.8 sec's ....that was the juice from hatteras which started blowing (Sunday around midnite) .........
Stuck in my office. What's up? I think my Indian Wave dance worked on Sunday. It looked choppy on the cams on Sunday so I thought I would drive out to SOBE and it totally sucked, so I did a cheesy dance as a joke and wished for more waves before this month is over. Then on Monday I received a phone call from Mario reminding me to wear a life vest :) I'm still headed to Sebastian Inlet this weekend. Yeehaw!
it is still possible to surf alone at SOBE!
i just got a 1 hour session in head high waves..LOL
you mean waist?!?!?! cams look there's something out there
somewhat consistent lines in boca
waist to stomach with a head high set every 10 min .....seemingly breaking out near the bahamas lol
a bit more textured than this morning but no rain.....
FYI beach renurishment project slated for next week in bal harbor. dumping sand on beach from orlando - 10 million dollar project -
is this kosher?
wow nova no way?! last weekend i caught south beach when it was overhead and offshore too! nobody out but me.
Awsome day in NPBC today. Sholder to head high waves to be had by all. The wind went light around noon making for fairly clean conditions. Nice long lines with some sectioning. Fun was had by all who made it out. Hope tomorow bring same.
occasional head high sets at south beach today. hopefully itll be the same tomorrow
canaveral bouy 12.8 @ 10 sec....
also fort pierce 4.3 @ 12 sec (39 degrees) = head high/slightly overhead in SPBC
and could build more?
quikscat seems to want to keep the winds a mystery for the last 3 updates over SE water's so
let's see if the size and angle can hold for dawn (could be bomb'n)
Sobe this evening, crowded occasional head high with mild winds, mild chop, rainbow, mild drift, swell peaking near the bouys and breaking in thigh deep water with glass in my foot on the way out.
Mid MB was fun today about waist with a few bigger cleaner sets.
South yest had some chest from 6 p.m. - 8, p.m., sort of clean b/c winds weren't too bad. fun!!! upcoast must have been firing. thinking about checking South again this a.m.
This morning we have local S/SE winds round hea in the 15 knt range, SE winds in the Palm beaches turning to the E in Cocoa (with higher speeds) and finally NE winds near jacksonville and up the Eastern seaboard (Close to the coast). Also of note is SW winds down in the Keys. Much less North fetch past 18 hours so expect a considerable drop down here. Increasing East winds and fetch in the central Fla region . Lighter winds down here. Since waves propagate in a radial pattern we could see waves further South (like southern Palm Beaches/North Broward) with lighter wind patterns. Unfortunately much less energy pointed in our direction so you may have to travel North a bit the next few days. Main energy wil be pointed at Central and north Fla. Further out a Secondary low moves out to sea later in the week but with limited fetch. Still we should have surf up the road at least until Sat but dropping off to 3 ft-4ft range. Bouys upcoast are still way up but with a diminished wave period hence more local windswell than ground swell. Happy hunting today and take what you can get. Anything this time of year is a treat.
swell turned ENE N Palm beach county and north for swell
Swell peaked last night, and the Brevard inshore bouy showed 18 feet at 10 seconds with gale force winds. Larger swells offshore to the north of that. NPB is still overhead today, and yesterday afternoon we had chunky closed out sets well overhead at Briny. Looks like the center of the low consolidated off Ft. Myers, so we can expect SE breezes on the east coast all day today. Yesterday was the day.
Algae bloom in NSB has now been moving south into Brevard, and the rain runoff will now be feeding it. Harbor Branch did a story on it this morning in the Stuart News. Ft. Pierce is putting out the swimming area bouy this week, so expect the big crowds there to be constricted even more.
anything left at south?
Just got a call from my friend Jay Dog . Reports Delray area fair and a bit lumpy . Tide starting to kill it.
CR surf just reported 2--4 ft overhead and 10 knt East winds up in Sat Beach.
Buddy of mine just gave me a live report from NPB - head+ well overhead range on the sets and "pretty good" - not super clean or anything, but pretty good. Sweet rides if you picked the right line.
Boca - very inconsistent with occasional NE swell lines in the waist-to occ. stomach rideable range .....otherwise tiny chop crap
Whats the outlook for Sebastian/Melbourne area for the weekend? Any luck the swell sticks around as the winds slack off?
CPB still had a boost in size after 5 this evening. Fun, head high drops and workable, jacking inside sections provided by the sets that were 15 minutes apart. At dark the sets seemed to stop. This weekend will be much smaller up coast, but the winds should be primo for clean conditions. I'd go to Brevard, at least.
Me and the misses going to Cocoa Beach for the weekend any ideas how the wind and waves will be around those days in those parts Pete? BTW North PB was head plus but very lumpy this afternoon. I suspect size will drop tomorow. Wish the wind would drop too.
By the look of things (wind and wave models) , they have changed recently and seem to agree winds will be E/SE thru the period (thru Monday) but diminishing in wind speed from 10-15 knts on sat/Sunto 5-10knts Mon. Earlier they had predicted offshores Sat and mainly Sun in the AM. Swell will still be around but not sure if a true cleanup will happen. Still depends of the movement of that broad low. I would def head upcoast and take my chances. I'll be out of town with the misses myself (bahamas)
Sobe evening report, thigh high breaking on the beach, great for teaching the kids how to ride. Go north for anything significant.
pete, u headed to bimini? i may be on cat cay this weekend. any waves over there?
LITTER AWARENESS POSTER CONTEST - deadline 5/29. Read more in this forum post
BTW - the report I called in was from set waves in Satellite Beach. (2-4 ft overhead) My bud Henry and I drove up to the pier and surfed from 3:30 to 5:00, wind not too strong, a few light squalls, and waves head high with 2 foot overhead sets. It was mega-chunky but a lot of fun just dropping in to some behemoths.
Mid MB is super fun!! water is moving and chopy but there's a great wave off the sand bar. Had to stop for lunch but heading right back out w/ the 8 ft'er!!
any report @ harbor house?
haulover this afternoon at dead low to switch: waist high w occ chest high drops.

Any ridables today?
Knee plus and windy in SoBe. ~G
any visuals in cfl today? if winds look light any day this weekend im considering heading north
Inlet was chunky and pretty fun yesterday. The ocean is REALLY alive. Phantom splashes everywhere, fish jumping, etc...
Just back from Cocoa trip with the wife. Fun chest to head choppy waves all weekend with this morning cleaning up more at the pier. On way back today stopped surfed Spanish House. Super fun chest high sets still coming in with much cleaner conditions but a little chop here and there. Best quality of all the last few days though. Had a blast even with the crowd the vibe was very mellow. I really like that place. Wonder what rest of week will bring.
inlet has been fun all weekend. Conditions yesterday werent too bad and today was def fun too. Very crowded, but waves everywhere
don't fall asleep THIS WEEK guys
winds will be rather light ...and we got somethin a brewin near central bahamas.....
check the martin county cam tues am ...you could be one of the few to catch a nice clean waist high swell........central florida should get a decent wave from this system.....and depending on it's track could sent something from a ENE direction by wed/thru.... Pete where you at.....!? Mr W keep your eyes peeled for a sneaker swell
Just got back from a cruise in the Bahamas. There was a fair amount of wind and some swell in the water in the New Providence Channel . Tropics are definitely up to something. Not only a low off the Bahamas but a low to come off the coast at 126 hrs out. Too early to tell but def looks interesting.
I saw the models and I thought I was so wrong and it was only my imagination since I didn't catch anything this past week.. now that Pete says it.. Let's cross our fingers, this could be a goodie.
posted new galleries - trashy pics and Surfboard Art - check em..

i like the trashy pics, creative. i sent an e-mail to the city officials 2 weeks ago about the trash. here is the response from Commissioner Gross:
"In the next 60 days, the City will be installing two additional containers at the entrances to the beach in South Beach. One container will be for trash and one for recycling. These are in addition to the containers already existing. These should help a little, although certainly by themselves, they won't solve the problem. We have also restructured the time schedule when the County cleans the beach, so that there is an afternoon pickup in South Beach. This also should help deal with overflowing containers in the afternoon on busy beach days. Finally, we are trying to get a consensus behind more stringent enforcement of the litter laws, but this has been a tough one since many are afraid such an enforcement posture may lead to negative publicity and scare away tourists in a down economy."
sounds good to me in my opnion. they are taking this issue seriously. now lets get some surf this week!!!
here was another response i got:
"Good afternoon,
Commissioner Libbin is discussing stronger enforcement with the administration. We have had recent concerns about violations being challenged which prompted him to work on strengthening the laws regarding graffiti and litter to avoid loopholes. Commissioner Libbin has recently successfully convinced the Commission and administration to change the regulations and is now working with them to ensure that they are strongly enforced.
Calls placed to code enforcement or the police department (after hours) to report these concerns are recorded and can be followed up on. You may call the code enforcement office to report them at 305 673 7555. If they are not handled, please advise us of the incident number or time and date the calls were placed so that we may send the information to the administration for review.
In the meantime, please continue to contact our office if you have additional questions or concerns.
Regards,
Enid"
the above e-mail was sent from Jerry@miamibeachfl.gov
that's enough from me on the trash topic. surf update posts from me for the rest of the week
Beautiful artwork from Mark Longnecker. So nice that I'd have a tough time surfing on them.
I'm back from Melbourne. I wanted waves and got them. At some point I thought I was swimming on the same spot lol. Saturday there were plenty of chest and some occasional head high at Spanish House (going to post pics soon). Sunday died down a bit, but still ridable. Hoping for something in South FL this week....
Surfed Inlet Friday, was really good, thick with some power.
FELT GREAT!! to get into the water again!
sure wished a three hour drive wasn't necc. to surf.
even Stuart gets old after awhile
it'd been classic if a Ocean Drive magazine was amongst the trash in that pic.
RydrHi!!!, I think that's Gooey surfing that trash shot
Gooey is way prettier than that! And he's missing the shades
GLos
yeah,
