Save the Biscayne Nature Center from Budget Cuts
Plug from tc
Posted May 12th, 2008 11:14 AMI got this in my inbox today. If you've never been, the Biscayne Nature Center is a truly special place in south Florida. It offers many city kids the oppurtunity to experience a natural coastal setting and learn about another world so close to home. Its really a great place and I urge you to lend them your voice if you can.
------------------------------------------------------
Friends of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center:
Help us save the Biscayne Nature Center from threatened budget cuts! We need your voice.
We are asking for your immediate help at a critical time. We know that many of you have visited the Biscayne Nature Center on Key Biscayne and participated in our many programs from Seagrass Adventures to Fossil Reef Walks to Native Plant Restorations. You have helped us to keep Marjory's dream alive for a nature center by the sea that serves tens of
thousands of children and adults each year.
Due to budget cuts, the School Board is forced to find programs to slash, and the school program with Dade County teachers at the Biscayne Nature Center is one possibility. At a time when the threats to our marine environment have never been greater, we need to enhance student knowledge about coastal and marine ecology. Clearly, the BNC's marine science education program in one of the best in Florida and will become more important in the coming years.
Please assist us. We believe the School Board may cut funding to this program if we are silent. Take just a few minutes to write a short e-mail note (or place a phone call) to the School Board members and Superintendent Rudy Crew (contact information listed below). Tell them why you believe the Miami-Dade County education program at Biscayne Nature Center must continue. The Biscayne Nature Center serves children from the Miami area who have never visited the beach before, it serves children who have never seen a seahorse, it serves children who have never taken a hike in the woods...until we take them there.
If our children really are our most valuable asset in South Florida, tell the School Board that this is exactly the kind of program that must not be cut. The program pays dividends in the present and in the future. Marjory was wise enough to know that children who learn to love our ocean and our hammocks and our wildlife will grow up to become adults who act to preserve.
Thank you for using your voice for children, education, and environment.
Please forward to your interested friends.

Just my luck. I finish finals tomorrow, a swell comes, and I get called for an interview for an UNPAID summer internship for Thursday at 2:30 pm (which kills my chances of getting upcoast). Although I am happy to have an opportunity, it is unpaid and it is in Immigration Law.
If anyone wants to hire me as a law clerk/intern (I will work for free) in the area of Environmental Law, please contact me via email carlos.m.leon@gmail.
oh yeah, and make sure to contact the above mentioned individuals regarding the Nature Center.
80 hours from now.......................
peace and progress!
ok, got the interview moved for wed. surfs on
Wednesdays gonna be good too
Mother Earth was pissed for Mother's Day. Earthquakes, Super Typhoon's Ect.
I sent a quick email to all of the board, and most of them were quick, 1 line "thank you for caring" type emails, but this one from Evelyn Greer had more info on the problem. Enjoy the surf Miami!
Thank you for your email.
The Board must cut $289 million from the 2008-09 budget, which has
already required elimination of many programs and services and will
require the reduction in force of more than 1000 employees The State of
Florida is funding MDCPS for 2008-09 approximately $78 million less than
it did in 2007-08, on top of the $65 million cut this year, on top of
the $20 million taxpayers cut in January 29 "property tax reform" vote
plus the State is requiring that numerous unfunded requirements be paid
from the reduced district funds.
Teachers in Miami-Dade and Broward County have the highest salaries in
the State of Florida, yet Miami-Dade and Broward receive per students
funds at the same level as all other counties - there is no
consideration for the higher cost of living here.
As a result of the Budget Workshop on Monday, April 28, the School Board
has indicated that it will agree to the following:
The elimination of $22 million of central administration positions The
elimination of two out of the six Regions and all positions The
elimination of the Zone and all related central administration positions
The elimination of summer school and field trips The elimination of
rehiring of principals, APs and teachers after DROP The elimination of
summer school, field trips, media specialists and many other positions
The elimination of all non-State required transportation, including all
magnet/vocational/summer school and alternative transportation, and 158
drivers positions
The elimination of 130 regional psychologists and social worker
positions The elimination of administrative bonuses, take home cars,
administrative supplies The increase in school lunch cost And many other
cuts
We anticipate that the State will make further budget cuts during the
summer or after the elections, when the Constitutional amendment
eliminating local funding of schools is adopted. At that time, I
believe that the Board will have a further reduction in force affecting
teachers and school based employees. This is what the taxpayers of
Florida have voted for overwhelmingly and the Board has no choice as
Florida requires a balanced budget no matter how low the budget is cut.

For any of you WCT fans out there..... Teahupoo starts tomorrow. Should be a slow start but it will be interesting to watch them destroy 4 foot chopes. don't be shocked to see a pulse at waistish tommorrow A.M from the low that was off New england/Noa scotia sat-sun.
early will be offshore.
The main event will have large surf yet winds will not be favorable till friday. Moderate to Large swell fills in late wednesday IMO.
Yeah, the hits are going everywhere budget wise. Was just at the WLRN Community Advisory Board meeting. Public Radio is largely supported by the School Board and private donors (Friends of WLRN), things are not looking good.
Sucks when budget cuts hit home! Just helped this great person, Carol with mothers' day gifts for her autistic, deaf, and blind students at Hialeah middle. They are getting rid of her and her class. Why? When she retired there was no one in the public system who could sign (do sign language). Because of budget cuts they do not want to pay her well deserved pension plus her current salary (kill to birds with one stone).
Good obs Cpick. Looks like the offshores have been scaled back a bit to Friday. Still the winds won't be too much of a factor. If we are lucky the swell will last till Sat with cont Offshores.
Check out the latest shot on the Boca surf cam. http://www.bocasurfcam.com/
Little lines coming through.
Jup is waist high already!
I may get skunked again. Friday winds will be onshore within a reasonable distance-Ft. Pierce south. North of there MAY have offshore winds on Friday. Saturday will have the offshores and as Pete suggests, a swell BUT I have family duties.
The worst winter/spring EVER
NO WAVES EVER for me!
peace and progress!
haha!
drive by showed small occ lines red reef to spanish river (boca).
bouys picking up some "background" swell from first NE low pressure ("round 1") might see a rideable wave down boca(thigh - waist) bit later today but winds turning onshore/side shore in time for anything that may build from that to crap it up.
looks like Wed evening the NE bombs will be heard from the parking lots from LW (or Likely Delray North). by the time the winds switch offshore the swell *should have turned more ENE, (depending on the storm's interaction with the high wed. ) so west palm beach and north appear to be the spots, Friday AM with probably head high lines left.
Pretty amazing how shrimp alaways gets the goods!!! Even when there arent any!!!
Mr. Pick. I sure hope you're right. You are making a name for yourself and if you're right., well that could push you to the top considering we've not heard nary a peep from PETIE PIE!
HELL YAH, I could get off Friday Morning and bolt up to S Palm Beach. That would just be the cock for Dolly!
peace and progress!
I didn't know they called you Dolly?
you still don't know. SOOoooo......Do you think HORNEY-the-surfer likes chicken, Eh Pajaro?
Still hopen Friday's wind forecast will switch from South to South West. COMON DAMNIT!
peace and progress!
Pajaro para Dolly?
N Palm Beach Had the goods this afternoon. Solid chest to sholder high sets coming in ever so often mixed in with smaller stuff. Nice long swell lines. Some rides were sweet catching from outside and riding all the way to the inside with three or more nice wall ups to smack the lip on it. Wind was not a factor at all , although present.
Building surf all day Wednesday
Low moved pretty quickly to the east today and that may cost us some size as things move later in the week but the circulation is quite large as well and their will still be stomach high surf by friday in "north country".
I gave HAARP headquarters a call and asked them to create a nice little low pressure off melbourne, but they didn't return my call so onshore's are the call thru at least dawn on Friday.
Checkd the surf up here in NPBC and it has some size to it but the wind is all over it and a hard S. drift. Saw a few guys paddle for the outside only to get pushed back by flocks of whitewater and drift down the beach before giving up. So if you ate your Wheaties this AM go charge it, otherwise wait till it gets better.
looks big on the pump house cam outside reef road is breaking i was going to juno but that might be a lot of work wind is no good for spots south of the pier so i dont know what to do
"Saw a few guys paddle for the outside only to get pushed back by flocks of whitewater and drift down the beach before giving up"
must have been kooks from SOBE.haha-cant believe anyone wouldnt make it out - doesnt look that big on the cams.....they must have gotten their gear in x-mas and are trying it out for the first time
another hyped uop swell -as someone said earlier, the low moved east quickly - its also pretty far north and any waves headed our way are gonna get blocked by the bahamas. sloppy seconds for all -
johnny angle on swell is 35-40 degrees today, No bahama blockage unless you are south of Boca.
That will change tomorrrow thanks to the faster movement of the low to the east. Still a fetch (small to med length) east of new england will keep surf going from West Palm north thru late friday at head high. The fast movement did rob some size but still should peak near 7 feet at better NNE/NE breaks later.
Any visuals for Miami Beach? Is it worth taking the log out for those who can't travel north today?
danka!
exactly south of boca - that means us...
South Beach visual....mush and wind blown crap, couple LB'ers out and doesnt look worth it
good point (dooh) my bad johnny
outer canaveral bouy just jumped over 10 feet at 13.8. thats some solid overhead juice.
late evening size should jump.
will there be anything at south beach tom morning (thigh high or bigger)?
Sheesh I hate being stuck at work, any chance of it becoming ridable at SOBE later? Is this swell gonna linger into the weekend I wanna go to Palm Beach or Juno on Saturday.
You know it's messed up when fish are catching better waves than us!!!!!!!
http://shrimpcreole.com/newsc/photo_four.html
my call is NO.. head north for size and cleanness tomorrow or today's evening
Lakeworth :
Best Swell Direction:
S swells, ESE windswell and NNE swells Best Size:
chest- to head-high on the inside, double overhead on the outside
Best Wind:
WNW is offshore. ESE creates good windswell.
currently surfline is calling NNE swell with ESE winds for tomorrow, winds will rotate southwards later on..
thanks for the research pelu!
thanks for the research pelu!
today was best chance for anything decent for Sobe.
just got out of the water in boca, cleaner than i thought it would be. A break or two working nicely with size stomach to head high every few minutes on the sets.
going out late this afternoon and i am bringing a buddy with a kayak to a uncrowded spot, we shall see how he does. canaveral bouy back over 10 feet again and fort pierce bouy slowly picking up at over 14 sec as well.
i think the southern extent of the sizable swell after thursday wlll include DR thru friday-saturday Am.
Friday should still hold well into the ridable range and has the best chance of cleaner surf ( According to wind models) with winds going SW (or at least partially) by PM. Full SW-W winds Sat but leftovers more questionable in size. Funny how the models have been underestimating of late. My board is in the car starting tomorrow and the next few days.
Mr. W did you give that wheaties comment to someone today as they were walking out at Juno Pier? If so that was me. Was retarded amounts of work out there, caught 4 or 5 rights and managed to stay in position but first big left took me far enough for a 15 min walk back to the pier. Went up to corners right where the bend in the whitewater was and drifted like a mile or so S and took the long walk back on the road. Lots of size, lots of work, and horrible quality of wave. Wish i had taken a bigger board the 5 11 was killing me. Late tomorow should be fun IF we get that sw swing in the winds. GLos
Actually, I don't recall telling anyone at the Pier that comment but that is exactly where I was when I checked the surf this morning ( before heading into work). See if you listened to me on here you could of saved the drive and the frustration.
i was already out the door before that had been posted. Better than sitting at the office and i love me some French connection for lunch anyday. Love that place.

I came across and article from STAB mag on the fantasy forums which got a lot of attention from a lot of people in and out of the buis. Kinda a crazy story and certainly something that has been confirmed by many as ongoing. Just thought i'd throw it up on here see if anyone had any thoughts on this.

swell peaking tonite but staying around a while
with boca/delray currently dividing size and consistency
Boca= was decent until 6 then someone turned off the lights, Delray =good
chopes is gettin pretty exciting i agree with u there.. i hope tomorrows lake worth is worth a check
sorry los, that article is just way too long for me! I'm watching Taj right now. gimme the synopsis tomorrow.
Yeah, I tried to read the article and my first question was "Whats the point of this?" I'm not into the fantasy surfer BS so maybe i'm missing something, but I didn't understand what this has to do with anything.
More swell tomorow with spotty (SZ vs Qlty) conditions up and down the coast. Pick your spot wisely.
bouys dancing between ENE and NE Lake worth and north appears the call as long as that is going on.
i can think of a spot just around a bend requiring a lil jump.
Its overhead out there today! With some wind on it. Go charge it!
Was an article about one of the biggest pro photo/journalist in the buis, his stuggle with chem imbalances and alchohalism. About the people who stood by his side attempting to help him, and about those who didn't. He was had more of an influence on many of the biggest names in surfing than most others from the Curren era to just a few years ago. I personally am a big fan of STAB and this article although may not interest many people on this site had been a big topic of conversation in a few other forums and just thought some people might want to read it. No "point" to make just something interesting to read. And yeah it's pretty long but well written. I personaly know more than a few people in our community who stuggle with dependancy of one form or another. We have even lost people in our local surf community because of similar problems with dependancy. Anyways if you enjoyed the article great and if you didn't then sorry.

where's the spot for 12pm-3pm? i'm looking to drive anywhere from delray to npbc, let me know
is juno pier shitty on low tide?
im prolly gonna hit lake worth pier...lets see if the locals are as mean as the surfline article suggests.
^F*** you say the gayest crap
Great article......guy gets drunks and rapes his friend (a dude) in his sleep...and blames it on the alcohol and other circumstances..I've been shitfaced beyond belief with booze, chemicals, and never tried to rape a dude. I don't know of any dudes in the local lineup getting shitfaced at Ted's and raping their surf buddy later in the evening.
u love it dont u D, haha...
anyways, got a report from npbc, am had size but wind was def on it.
Right Now --> some guys are getting fun ones at the cove on reform. Conditions are not favorable, but there is size if u need it, might not be as big tom.
definitely won't be as big tom.
Delray was almost zoo like and inconsistent this afternoon w/ 5 minute waits for chest high swell.
Definitely better in S. palm beach yesterday afternoon.
Surfed Juno pier after work today. Solid head high plus sets still rolling through on the outside. Conditions were fairly clean with some nice long rides to be had if you timed it right. Looking forward to round four tomorow with a bit smaller surf of course.
Not to mention mostly closed out in Delray :(
Swell holding but dropped a bit. Wind patterns light enough to show S/SW and lightish up the road (certain areas). If you have a chance go today. Enjoy
Good morning... I am in south palm beach (spent the night up here) and there is nothing here now. Going up to Juno but the swell is definitely gone in south palm beach-lantana to be exact. As for yesterday surfed this area in the shoulder + range from 2 pm onwards. The winds dropped off and the conditions were good. later boyz...
Thanks for the visual xavi, see you in the water later.
LW area has a wave as tide dropped, but not consistent (today) sort of like DR yesterday.
wouldn't be surprised for DR to have a waist high set every 10 minutes given low tide now but the swell angle is not as good
I know that's desperate but just think of what we have in store for the next two months flatness likely
went up to ponce surfed wed and thurs (overhead) stopped at the north jetty on the way home it was a bit smaller but had fun surfing with all the boys there was at least 15 of us out it felt like home still looks good today
oscar you missed out overhead south winds and only 10 or 15 people out
Visual from FP. Fun early waist to chest. Midday low tide making for closeouts. Should improve as the tide fills back in. I'm headed North in a few.
Just got a report from Wyatt and Gregorio (CR surf) they surfed Jup with mod crowds but fun shoulder high (some +) sets. Wind SE but never really much of a factor.
Is that south of the inlet or north? I might drive to the north side after work since it might be hanging on to something. Most spots are dropping fast as of lunch time.
swell continues to drop on the buoys, cameras confirm the same. Looks like NADA in PB's already. Bummer there won't be much for us weekday 9-5ers for mañana..... Hope you all got some though.
M
Just got out of the water at ft pierce, it was great fun earlier but tide wind and dropping swell is making things pretty mediocre now.
Any ideas when the wind will turn?
Yep- Juno this morning was the right call with both sides of the pier working in the shoulder + range and the very occasional overhead set-one actually broke a good 20 yards further out from the end of the pier-needless to say nobody was in position to catch it. Moderate southwest winds were choking the left on the southside of the pier but it was definitely worth it. On the north side the inside reform was killer this morning as well with some locals ripping it. Left at 11:00 am and it was dropping in size for sure. Winds picked up after that so it looks like that is it for this one. Later...
P.S. If any of you young guns wants to help me get to Pete some killer video of ULU going off please let me know as my computer skills are not the best. I have been trying to get these clips over to Pete for a while now but I have not been able to do so. I have over 45 minutes of epic ULU in the 15-20 foot range that I am sure you would like...
juno got too crowded yesterday.. went up to the inlet and scored some good ones. great day
Juno turned to crap after 2pm
Did you go out today, Rob? Good seeing you on the water yesterday and at the Surfrider EC meeting last night.
Cheers,
Shane
Yeah I was out at the south side of Juno pier fighting the drift with 25 others. It was great for a couple of hours. I saw the crew there...Greg, Mike and Wyatt... I got out to get lunch and check some other spots and when I returned the wind was cranking and the swell was dropping.
surfed npb yesterday from around 1pm-330pm. big and heavy, beautiful water. some closeouts, but there was an insane tube section really close to shore. fun if u knew what u were doing, but a buddy of mine dislocated his shoulder in the shallows.
Surfed Juno pier for lunch. North side was fun with chest high sets rollin in. Came back after work around 4:30pm to find much smaller size and heavy south wind on it. After going on the south side and surfin the left overs at one point in the evenin the wind clocked more to SW and all of a sudden some of the lingering sets had a nice bite to them with solid sections and fun rides. It was almost like the swell put on a little oncore as a last good bye. Don't expect much for tomorow or the next few days. Its over!!
Just got back from FP did a late evening session. Wellworth it as it got better as the tide came upand so did the waves. Clean light winds and very fun. Still some sets at a surprising waist/shld high at dusk . Should still be at least waistish in the am. I've got another early bird shot up that way in the am.
It was cool to see familiar faces in the lineup today. Warnke, Rob, MG, Wyeeta... Let's keep the car pool crew rollin...

Dear administrators:
When I heard that budget cuts might close the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Nature Center, I had to at least voice my opinion and my objection to having the center closed.
The future parents in Miami-Dade are the students coming up through the public school system. You have the authority to choose what should be taught, and at what cost. Our coastal ecosystem supports not just our tourism based economy, but our water aquifers and food sources. Without the nature center, I don't think the students will learn to appreciate what they have to share, and to protect it.
Please consider my request to keep the Biscayne Nature Center open.
Respectfully yours,

i do admit, cali is awesome. Flat means clean knee high surf at worst. and blacks is just a couple of minutes... if not baja is just 30...
Great whites , wetsuits, storm run offs, heavy localism, expensive living costs, earthquakes, raging fires, The Governator, over population, gas prices... but yeah I think I'd rather be in Cali.
When flatness strikes this week your going to wish you were anywhere but here. Enjoy the silence..err flatness.
Pray For Surf.......to understand the ocean's greatness you have to get wet.......I missed this last swell got caught up on some work....Any one get any good Pictures? Please post them in the Gallery........
See ya after summer Flatness........
the worst part about this flat streak coming up is that the wind will be offshore/ light variable onshore which means even the skim will be flat, Fudge.
Here's some pics from our last trip to St Thomas. We had to go on 3 seperate trips due to lack of waves. The first trip there was a 6-9 foot NE swell in the water but the angle was just not doing it for St Thomas. We came home with nothing. On the 2nd trip we caught St Croix big, but St Thomas again was flat. So the 3rd time we finally scored some head high surf and then a day later it was flat again so we ventured over to Tortola to find perfect peelers. Not big or anything but just perfect, straight off shore ...chest to head high. We also found that secret spot featured in Transworld earlier this year.
Here's the link.
