NO WAVES EVER

Forecast wyatt

The Bush /Cheney years have finally caught up with us. Not only do we have close to $4 per gallon (a good thing) but now we have food riots in third world areas, food rationing here in the US, an economic recession, mortgage foreclosures tornados, fires and mudslides somewhere and NO WAVES!

C.Leon's picture

i cant believe those crooks got elected the first time. and the second time?!?!?!? u gotta be kidding me. We're just the retards that didnt invest in Exxon stock. Mission accomplished for Bush/Cheney though. They raided the US Treasury and now Exxon and Haliburton are doing well.

wyatt's picture

And now NO WAVES EVER!

peace and progress!

We look like a pile of steaming monkey crap in the eyes of the rest of the world.
And yes no waves ever.....at least in SoBe.

The ever eloquent and optimistic Wyatt starting a positive  thread again. Damn you, can't you ever see the glass is half full. This is just history repeating itself, the fall of an empire.  A new world order.  The doomsday swell is near. Frown

why don't we throw in a new war with gov't and central banks eager to do what ever it takes to issue debt/bonds and let's institute the draft since the military is worn thin, talk about protests. Then let's starve everyone slowly so people are eager to accept whatever tyranical solution is offered to bring back peace while creatively (behind the curtain) the restructuring and consolidating of the world's banking financial system to maintain the PTB occurs. (Putting the finishing touches on a Plan/business movement in the works since 1694 when bankers opened the bank of england ( and then went on and infiltrated/indebted and conspired w/ everyother major country and congress/treasury/govt dept (gov't get to spend spend spend/ bankers get to indebt indebt indebt and collect collect collect., The current financial system is struggling to keep from collapsing under a pyrmaid scheme of debt (like empire's/country's have done in periods for over 4000 years w/ fractional reserve lending at interest) and doing whatever it takes to issue more debt (suprime lending and investing anyone).

Anyhow back to the half full glass, decent waves this am, and wondering Pete if you see any shot for offshore's early?

Mr W.'s picture

On a side note surfed Juno pier afterwork. Nice long chest to sholder high waves with fun for all. This swell really panned out. Hope it will last through tomorow.

C.Leon's picture

why did surfline report 1-2ft all the spots u guys caught at chest high?

Mr. B's picture

Because that's just the way it is, C.......

So Wyatt, Soulger, Pete, cpick, what your saying is that it's never too late to buy into oil stocks - correct?  Wink

Highly unlikely for SW winds like we had today. However, tomorrow may hold with N/NW winds early on and a holding swell.  Won't last long as the winds are forecast to be onshore .

I say sell all your belongings and get out while you can.Surprised

RRivas1985's picture

Confirming Mr.W's report on Juno Pier, Really fun lines too bad I didn't have a longboard they were getting the best waves way outside haha. Kinda crowded though. Made it tough to catch waves without jumping into the Paddle Battle with everyone at the main peak. Water was beautiful, clear. Definitely saw some head high sets in there today. Worth the drive 100%

The Liberal tree hugger policies have finally caught up with us. Not only do we have close to $4 per gallon (not a good thing) but now we have food riots in third world areas, food rationing here in the US, an economic recession, mortgage foreclosures tornados, fires and mudslides somewhere and NO WAVES.
Lets wait longer to build another refinery and longer to drill for our own oil. Thats worked out just great. People have been rioting over food in third world areas way before Bush 43 or 41 came into office. Lets keep using our food supply to create bio fuels. Good Idea Mr. Gore.(Inventor of the internet in case you didnt know). Mortgage foreclosures are the fault of the people not making the payments. ARM sounded so good at the time.DUHH!
Mr. bush with his tornado machine and hurricane steering device working so well.
People building thier homes in a wildland /urban interface. Nobodys fault but their own if a brush fire is threatening with no fire hydrants for miles. Mudslides ? Lookout below.
I dont mean to put this back in anyones face but most of these problems are their own fault (including me) and not the fault of any one man. Blame the man in the mirror.
And quit complaining. My glass is not only half full but my cup overflowith.
Peace be with you.
Mercy before self sacrafice.

C.Leon's picture

how can u surf and not be a tree hugger? Let them start drilling off the Fl coast and the things shipping out of Saudi Arabia wont be the only barrels of oil. north swells with offshore winds will bring some spitting black pits to sobe!!

and btw, McCain is supporting ethanol, which is a horrible idea no matter who it comes from. biofuels release a crapton of carcinogens right into our local air.

we need to stop bickering about liberal/conservative and STOP electing crooks!

but money runs this world so my suggestion is; travel or move to pristine places like costa rica where you can live the pura vida while it lasts.

keep up the respectful debate! i like hearing all opinions/perspectives.

I admit I do have some tree hugger charicteristics in my blood. To a point. The preserve and wildlife in my backyard is something to behold . I too do not want to see black pits as much as you at our beaches. Wheather or not we decided to drill off our coast Cuba has already begun drilling the oil rich intercontinental shelf in the GOM and Florida Straights with much success. We all know where the gulfstream runs and it will carry the black gold to our shores reguardless of our decision. Until we come up with a better alternative Drill Drill Drill and tell the Saudis A salam a lechum. (Poor spelling) sorry bout that.
Technology gets better every day and drilling can be done in a respectfully responsible manner.
ANWAR open it up. Drill the intercontinental shelf and Build some refineries.
Nuclear energy is clean, why havent we built a plant in 30 years?
Pay ourselves. Invest in our country.
We get only 1/3 of our imported oil from the mliddleeast. Most of the rest of the other 2/3rds comes from Canada and Mexico....Our neighbors and friends.
Wake up America. Si se puede! Respectfully yours

bat3flotr:

Not all foreclosures are due to inability to pay, some are due to your husband's best friend selling him a property chock full of stachybotris mold and then covering it up. A lot of it is also due to scamming banks and mortgage companies overinflating the value of properties and now the big surprise that it has fallen apart on them and our ecenomy. We are just experiencing our own bubble burst just like the Japanese economy did a decade ago, I wonder if some other super power will step in to help us?

No surprise that you have a totally apathetic point of view on the world. So much easier to comment on things and say how we all deserve it instead of trying to make a change. How very American of you. Luckily more and more Americans are realizing that things are really bad and want to change it.
Why should we blame Bush when he's just the idiot figure head that hides Darth Cheney and his cronies? But if its your philosophy we should follow, then we should blame people like you and ourselves for the mess we are in, right?

Reef Goddess

In other notes, I received my state aquaculture license and we are growing corals right and left. I will hug my aquatic tree anytime and happily slay all unrepentent Bush supporters!!! Bwahahaha!!!

batr:
Wow, read your other post, you really have no clue. Instead of investing in an archaic fuel such as oil, why not invest in greener sources of energy? Why must we be so far behind Europe when it comes to fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness? Is there any real need to own a Hummer in a city like Miami? Or a $300,00 sports cars?

You probably are one of those people that just talks about surfing and doesn't actually do it, because if you did you would actually value clean water and the realize how lucky we are that we're not constantly getting crude oil on our boards and shorts like in Texas or swimming with harmful bacteria and pollutants. Have ever even been to Lousiana and seen how much pollution is in their air and water due to their totally lax environmental polices? As it is our beaches are far from pristine, how often do you actually throw away some of the trash all of the idiots leave on the beach over the weekend?
Have you seen any articles on how much damage is being done to the environment above Alaska where the current adminstration has opened it up for drilling? The only reason we are still using oil based fuels is because there are too many fat cats out there making tons of money off of it and an adminstration that gets kickbacks on top of kickbacks.
It is ignorant people like you that sit in their chairs and talk about how we need more drilling and its not a bad thing without ever doing any real research. I have a serious lack of respect for you.

two words. surf site

Its over for a few days. As hard as I( and others) try  to keep this site surf related, the political and world views are going to come out.

Good posts Reef goddess and Batdude.  Both of you have valid points. I like the accountability views.

As for waves and winds, looks like more N/NE winds early today with continued NE swell. Nowhere near as clean as yesterday. I wouldn't take the day off but if you have nothing mo betta to do--

C - They weren't "elected" the first time, and there are serious doubts as to the second time, too... Selected, yes (thanks to our illustrious Supreme Court the first time and, well, who-the-hell-knows just what they did the second time... rigged the machines, perhaps)...

And yes, we can absolutely thank them for relaxing environmental laws and allowing their greedy-ass corporate buddies to dump whatever-the-hell-they-want-wherever-they-want and making the waters we surf in more polluted.

And about oil - has anybody heard of "Peak Oil"? Oil production has maxed out and will never again be able to satisfy demand. This will not only keep prices going UP ($4, $5, $7, $10) - but will eventually (and soon) lower availability to all but the most necessary - that means NOT YOU OR ME. (This is the primary reason the U.S. is trying to steal the world's oil - to delay the inevitable. Sleazy Cheney knew this long before he stepped foot in the White House).

It also means that everything else which relies on oil will see the same fate; one example being electricity. (Bush's ranch in Texas now runs completely OFF-GRID. Being that Bush is an oil man, this should tell us something, yes?)

Say whatever the hell you want about us "tree huggers" - but the truth is that If we had started the switch to renewable energy sources years ago - we could have circumvented this problem. But GREED, unfortunately, got in the way.

Welcome to the future boys and girls... It's going to get interesting... Damn, I need waves...

~peace!~

Yes, waves for world peace and tranquility. I see a start of a new movement. Well said Slider.

If it wern't for surfing and the good waves we've had over the past few days I too would be down on all this economy and environmental crap. Its total BS if you ask me whats going on but I say it will iron out sooner or later. Its the nature of the beast. Instead of pondering and bitchin about it I choose to go surf and enjoy it while I still can. Peace and progress! Go Surf!

Hey reefgodess...... how about you hook it up with some locally grown coral there, i hear their is a recession and coral prices are out the roof lately. I just swithched my 90g from fish only back to reef and could use some frags. And there is always waves, you just have to be willing to drive, fly, or paddle over to them. It's funny how on this surf site you will all go on constantly about your political views and BS, but not one other person has said a word about the sickness that was Teahupoo for 3 days, the upcoming WCT in which FL god Slater is going for his 9th title, or how FL boy Alek Parker was a standout at yesterdays 6.0 at trestles. To each his own, but i just don't get it.

C. Leon - not sure when you checked the written reports. These are updated only twice a day - once after sunrise and then around 12-1pm. If something happens in between these updates such as a swell filling in, then of course the report from sunrise will not match up with what you see at 10am.

The afternoon report for Juno Pier was 2-3' occ. 4' from NE swell. The morning report was minimal as per our spotter (verified by the cams) so not sure what you were looking at. And yes, the afternoon visual from Reef/Flagpole area indicated small surf at that point in time. I heard it ws good yesterday evening there but again, well after report time so not reflected on the site.

Yeah, Glos this site sucks. Actually, the discussion has been real good.

More frustrating for me is that there have been waves upcoast but I have to work and to drive 80 miles to surf OK waves is ........well too much for my cheap ass. I like Pete's idea. "Sell everything, get out while you can!" Maybe you could convince Quayny too. cause I got just the place to go! TC, does it hurt to sit?

peace and progress!

GablesLos's picture

No Wyatt, this site is great, and i have never ever said a damn thing about this SITE sucking. I just feel in my opinion, which means jack, that people would talk about more surf related topics whether that be environmental, contest, trips, surf industry. I know someone can spin all that political crap into saying that is what surfing is all about and that is surf politics or something, but that is BS. But the same person that would spin that around probably looks at the glass half empty all day every day.

Hey guys, our new episode of Island Hoppers comes out this Saturday at 3:30pm on SUN. We went to St Croix in the Virgin Islands and scored this long right hand point break. Never heard of the place before this trip and its such a great wave, check it out. If you miss it saturday it will be on all month.

no this wont iron itself out - the debt we are in as a country is astronomical - it will take decades to correct it -

drilling for oil in US territory will not loweryour gas prices - the oil industry is not stupid -they know we will pay for thegas at high prices why would they want to lower it and risk not making recordbreaking profits year after year?

it bad for the environment and wont help your wallet either - just because cuba is drilling (according to who?) - last time i checked VEN suppulies Fidel with oil - doesnt mean we should jump on the same bandwagon -

changing to bio fuel is not taking food off the table - we waste so much food in the us its ridiculous - plus there is so much unused farmland that needs to be worked again - we can grow - no i also heard it sends gases into the lower atmospehre and we breatha this - so its probably not the solution for a country in which everyone drives - pollution would be out of control but - we do live in miami and have ocean breeze and pretty clean air so it shouldnt be so bad here.

what ever happened to solar energy - i keep hearing people dis it by saying the panels are expensive - but in the long run its pretty much FREE - ok so you can drive your car on solar energy just yet - but electricity to power your home etc...

hydrogen fuel cars are coming soon - they are already buildgin the infa strcuture in sweeden i think - and the by product is pure H2O!!!

foods getting expensive along with everything else - tine to admit this is a RECESSION and tighten up on spending - time to do with out some things - had to explain to my girl that we didnt need to buy the pre-cut apples at 4 dollars a pack (probably less than 2 apples in the pack) and other bs you dont need. for the record i have never bought those apples! refuse to do so.

people are loosing it already and feelign the pressure - crime is going to go up and road rage is gonna excalate - please send waves

Spirit announced flight to Trinidad starting later this year! Anyone ever surf there?

TheRealTruth's picture

I have been biting and my tongue trying not to chime in with non surfing rants while reading these posts, but here it goes...
What ever happened to personal responsibility?
The same people that are crying about gas prices are the same that are purchasing cars that get shitty MPG, Do you see them trading in their cars for smart cars. I don't think so.
The same people that are crying about foreclosures are the ones that took out equity loans or purchased their houses with ARMS. I understand that unscrupulous lending practices add to the confusing, BUT what happened to educating yourself before making a decision? With the advent of the internet and Google you can learn basic finance in 20 min.
The same people that complain about wildfires are the same ones who don't want controlled burns because they want to protect the endangered grass mouse or whatever the species.. Thus creating the environment for these out of control wildfires.
The same driving around in their Prius claiming to save the environment, are the one who will dump their cars in five years and then you have a bank of toxic lead batteries to dispose of.
How is that more environmentally friendly than a tried a true 4cyl diesel that get 50 MPG or a geo metro that everyone laughed at?
The most green technology on the surface is not always the best or most efficient. There has to be a balance. I'm glad to see the price gas at 5 dollars and hope it goes up even more maybe Americans will move to more efficient cars, mass transit, efficient hone with less SQFT as is the case in the rest of the world. The days of a gallon of gas being less than a gallon of Milk are on the way out..
The same people that sit at Starbucks sipping their latte and indirectly affecting the environment while calling themselves "green" complaint on how third world countries (Brazil, Peru, etc) are raping thier environment and natural resources, for a cheap buck. These same people should go doing and tell that to the dad that is worried about putting food on the table and a roof over his family that night . Tell him his family should go hungry and shouldn't fish that undersized fish or hunt that protected species and see how that goes over.
It is very easily to be "green" coming from a capitalist country that until recently (following our example China now is worse) rapes Global resources, poisons the environment, .and exploits cheap labor. Siting in suburban house with the a/c set at a comfortable 72F, watching football on their DTV and 50" plasma, a fridge full of food and a supermarket on every corner.
I fond this very hypocritical you want to be green? Move to a third world country, buy just the basics. ride an bike, grow your own food, live off the land , practice what you preach. I know a few friends that have done it and respect them as they are a better person than i.
Sorry, I cannot live without the creature comforts of today's industrialized society, but I do what I can. I drive a small car and maintain it to get good gas mileage. I recycle. I practice catch and release. I keep my toxic petroleum surfboards as long as possible and not get a new one every year., I have a modest boat with one fuel efficient engine ( not two or three), I volunteer my time with social issues that I feel are important, I give what I can to charities.
We live in a capitalist country so I vote with my dollars. I try to avoid Chinese products, buy recycled goods and environmentally friendly products. I keep it to the basics and think, "do I really need that new..." before I purchase it Think of the impact that product has getting manufactured, transported and stored and then spent and discarded by you. Everything has an impact. I don't expect to be called green or an environmentalist but a thoughtful realist.

I suggest for all of you to look at your "green" lifestyles and think are your actions really following what you preach?

TheRealTruth's picture

I feel better.... BTW my rant is all Wyatt's fault. See what happens when you get me started with a post like that?.

Great post real truth. You should post more often

crsurf's picture

Right now the US gets 20% of its energy from nuclear power. The problem is spent fuel rods of enriched uranium take at least 10,000 years (more like 25,000 years) to lose their radioactivity, which causes cancer in humans. The problem is where to store the spent rods. Yucca Mountain has been proposed, but no state wants the rods transported on their roads. And the safety factor of keeping rods at a local plant are what keeps us from building more of them. No civilization in recorded history lasted 10,000 years, so who is going to keep the uranium from leeching into our water supply? That is why we haven't built more plants. (yes, Japan is working on recycling spent rods, but even afterwards it is still quite toxic)

Being a former tech teacher, I've held many debates on energy alternatives. Every fuel source has its good/bad traits. But what should be an overriding consideration is what effect are we having on the environment by collecting it, using it, and disposing it. So far, the best answer is wind power. Solar power will top it when we can efficiently collect 100% of the sun's energy. Right now panels are only 15% efficient. (test models are up to 25%)

Read - http://money.cnn.com/2007/05/02/news/economy/...

IMHO, oil is destructive to natural habitat. Deep sea coral and marine life that have only recently been discovered are being destroyed by drilling in the Gulf. Roads built for distribution in Alaska has harmed wildlife migrations. And burning refined oil releases harmful CO2 gases. Now many people say, what's more important - humans or animals? But to me, my life is enriched by my interaction with my natural surroundings. If habitat disappears, it is nearly impossible to bring it back. And if a species goes extinct, then the human race suffers by losing a chance to appreciate its beauty, or learn from its habits, or learn its medicinal properties. We have to look past the short term comforts of abundant supply, and see the long term damage to our environment.

Regarding ethanol, biofuel can be a great alternative, but we don't need to grow corn for it. Right now, 25% goes to cattle feed and 20% is wasted due to bad storage. The idea that ethanol leads to food shortages is purely propaganda. Biofuels can be produced from algae, bacteria, soy, or switchgrass. It may not be the best alternative, but it should continue to be developed, not discarded.

I really like electric powered cars. Their caveat is the battery life, but I believe the car companies could recycle them if they only would put forth the effort in funding the R&D for it. The reason they don't is that they make their REAL money off replacing the gas engine parts. An electric motor has less parts to replace and they don't deteriorate. (http://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com/) Check out your options here - http://www.pluginamerica.org/

IF all of you posting want to make a difference yet feel powerless against the corporate empire, there are many ways to conserve energy out there on the web. One way is to carpool with amigos to go surfing. Another idea is to 'rent' solar panels for your home. (http://renu.citizenre.com/index.php?c=1168291...) They take care of installation and maintenance, you pay them a set rate based on your current electric bill, and it doesn't increase like your bill does annually. And if you produce more electricity than you consume, FPL pays you!! There are others, with a quick Google search you'll find them.

There are waves... Just not here, not right now... As for the whole money thing... Even though surfboards cost $100 more now than when Clark was open, the profit margin is still the same. People dont realize all the little things needed to make good surfboards. Its not just resin, foam, and cloth... I'm going to try and escape MIA for Nica or Costa Next month to keep my sanity in perspective... There are always waves breaking round the world. On any given day its perfect somewhere, and that day will arrive here in due time... Work Hard, be patient, and plan a good surf trip...

Nice post crsurf, good to hear from someone that actually has some research behind their post.

Batflor: So is that what it takes, you need a proof of a total of 2 months of negative growth before you change your views on how this adminstration is handling things? I seriously doubt that will make any difference to you and like all blind Bush supporters you will come up with yet another excuse as why our country as actually doing well and all the other facts are total lies. I understand that, no amount of evidence would make you or anyone like you change your mind, so I won't waste my breath.
I just hope for your sake that you are in a secure job that won't be effected by our not so great economy. My own business is not hurting, but I can tell you that people definately aren't buying as much as they used to be and thats a fact. I do belive if we can actually get the axis of evil out of the office; if that don't pull another 9/11 before the election that our country is resilient enough to turn things around and hopefully we won't all be speaking chinese by this time next year.

21 mpg you're really fuel efficient now huh?? LOL What a joke, I'm sure all the car companies that whine about not wanting to up their mpg love people like you saying their getting great gas mileage.

I wanted to get a hybrid but also needed a work vehicle to move aquariums around with so we settled on a Honda Element which gets me 27-30mpg on the highway since its a manual. Thats about the best you can get for a vehicle that size. There are some Jeeps with really good mpg, but not that great reviews so.... Hybrids are a nice idea and I'd love to have one but the battery takes up like the whole trunk. Its up to all of us to demand more efficient cars/technology as a society, until that happens nothing will change.

Diesel engines were great before diesel fuel went up to $4.50+ per gallon.

I agree, car pooling is a good option as is getting off your fat a** and riding a bike or walking to the store, work, etc. Mind you it doesn't help that public transportation in Miami and the rest of the US isn't the best, but it better than nothing I guess. Living in Japan was great, I could take a train practically anywhere and everywhere else I rode my bike, probably the best shape I've ever been in. ;]
Or just start working from home more. My life is a lot less stressful since I never have to deal with commuting.

I have to blame Wyatt as well for being bored and opening up a can of beans. I totally understand how the Bushshit can make you go crazy after awhile and you just want to strangle some people even when the waves are good. lol He knew what he was getting us into, big firestarter. ;p
Even if there are no waves you can still go kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, bike riding, fishing, etc, etc. I mean we could live in the arctic where we could really complain about crappy weather and nothing to do.
I mean there are still waves out there this week and we're already starting to compplain about no waves?! Boy we're not going to make through summer at all huh? lol

Glos, here's my website: reefgardener.net You're welcome to contact me about coming over sometime.

Have a great day everyone, now that I'm not so itchy I'm planning to brave the waves again and hope the thimble anemones have wandered off.

Ok, now that we have all the finger pointing out of the way and have safely placed the blame on the opposition, I invite you all to help out with the issue locally. Do your part on a small scale, which adds to a larger scale that ultimately makes a BIG difference.

Sunday June 1st, Surfrider Foundation of South Florida will have our follow-up Dune Restoration Event: The Planting. Come out and plant a native species to help protect the dunes in our area. It's a great way to spend a day and get involved with your local surf community. This is one event that is not partisan and everyone can feel good about.

good job surfrider!

Reef Goddess's picture

Its about time, thanks to Surfrider for fighting to keep our waters clean!

TheRealTruth's picture

I mean no offense, but since we are on the green trip How does everyone driving your SUVs over to the beach to restore a dune that has no good or bad environmental impact on a dredged beach help save the surf or ocean? I see it as a "feel good" esthetic's exercise. Please enlighten me as I just don't see it.
Couldn't you time. resources and GAS be better spent?

Reef Goddess's picture

The sea oats that are planted in the dune have up to 8 foot roots that go deep into the sand that help keep the dunes from erroding during storms. It may be a "dredged" beach but you probably wouldn't want to help pay for it to be replenished if it errodes. Anyway it just helps to raise environmental awareness about the delicate quality of our beaches whether they are manmade or not. So maybe more people will realize that the beach isn't just a place to come and leave your trash for the weekend.
What are you doing to help? Also you are assuming that everyone is going to be driving suv's there, when a lot of the people involved actually live there. By that time I also hope to be in good enough shape to ride the metrorail downtown, then ride my bike over the venetian causeway down to the beach restoration.
Since this is a useless project to you, are you planning to make it to the next beach cleanup or surfrider meeting?

TheRealTruth's picture

Sorry, but "awareness" can be brought in many more efficient ways The high waterline is alot farther than 8 feet. Even during hurricanes and big storms the dunes have offered little help in most of dade county as the waterline is so far away.
Dredging is going to happen as long as we build on a beach that has a natural sand flow and erosion. No matter how many "dune restorations" are done the dredging will happen and taxpayers will have to foot the bill. Tourism is still bug business in Maimi and the big beaches are part of it. No I will not attend as I dont see the benefit and think it is a waste of time. When I see Surfrider working to a cause that I find beneficial and can help make a substantial difference, I will happily attend and/or support with my donation.
As to what Im doing to help? Here is one for ytou. I wrote to my local representative and Gov. Christ to pass this biil that went through today. Did you?

Beach restoration is a good way to raise awareness if nothing else and whats so wrong with that? Beach cleanup actually serves a purpose as does telling other people about recycling and disposing of their trash properly. What would you rather see people do instead of beach restoration?

im greener than you!!!

Reef Goddess's picture

You better post a picture to prove it. ;p

TheRealTruth's picture

How are you raising awareness? by exposing it to fellow surfrider members that already are informed, or the maybe 100 passerbys while doing the project?
In my opinion, if you want to create awareness here is just one idea:
Everyone of the SF members goes to the closest local public school and talks to the school principal about being a guest speaker for the science portion of the class. Get them early and find a permanent solution through education. imagine how many schools you could hit? That would be awareness..
Look who is doing the littering alot of it is high school kids. Most don't think twice as schools are getting worse at teaxhing and especially at personal responibility.

pWOW, some real good and informative dialogue. TheRealTooth started out well with a post I would be proud of but has reverted back to his old ways! Maybe bat3flotr is having a bad influence. Saw a hummwer towing a giant go fast boat and chuckled to myself.

peace and progress!

hahaha - damn how did you get a pic of me in my new biodegrabale wetsuit

Real Truth,

Although not every single SF member participates, the local Surfrider Chapter does have an educational outreach program and several of our members (Wyatt, Josue, Lance-O) have spoken at some of our local shools. Currently, we are in the process of publishing a coloring book intended to educate younger kids about the local watershed. The local beach clean-ups not only clean up the trash left behind by high schoolers, and others, but also aims to educate those in the vicinity that see what we are doing and tend to ask questions. If the educational outreach is an issue that you feel strongly about and think makes a real difference in the local community, we could certainly use your valuable input and time.

I certainly hope that none of our members give you the impression that they are 'greener' than you or anyone else for that matter. I see them as everyday people that really just want to try and do something for their local environment, even if that entails restorations to artifical dunes. In my opinion, by virtue of being American, we all equally share in 'our' nations habits of overconsumption and waste and it will take 'all' of us to adopt new practices and disciplines. A critical part of that solution is for both sides to share equally in the responsibility and redivert energy from attacks to action.

kshane's picture

Truth, you seem to know where and what we should put our time and resources in at SF. I invite you to come out to our next meeting and offer up some of those suggestions. We are a non-profit, all volunteer organization. Finding "idea" men and women, creative thinkers and more importanly people to act on those ideas is not easy. Mostly because too many "creative thinkers" like yourself are sitting back mocking our offorts instead of improving upon them. Our tagline this year is "locals wanted." If you think we could be doing better or putting our resources to better use, step up and show us the way. Otherwise, it's all cannon fodder.

Cheers,
Shane Close

My friends,
Thank you C. Leon and Pete for continuing and enjoying a respectful debate.
As for reef goddess your esp skills are steering you wrong if you see me driving a hummer or
luxury sports car. I just paid off my Tacoma 2 months ago and get 21 mpg. not too shabby.
Your esp again steers you wrong if you dont see me surfing either since ive been surfing PBC for
23 years. I applaude your environmental conservation and education im sure you have to love what you do for work as much as I do. You say we should be more like Eurpope and I agree.
They use Nuclear energy and lots of it. But environmentalists here wont let us build another plant
to help out the situation. Porque?
No recession here as you all were hoping for as the GDP numbers out today or economy grew up 6 tenths of a percent. A recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth.
Yet to have one month of negative numbers since the man you love to hate took office. Sorry to dissapoint .
I appretiate you calling me ignorant it shows your true colors. I wont resort to name calling. or making assumptions on you lifestyles for I know nothing about you except you hate G.W. and
you grow coral heads for a living.
Respectfully and ignorantly yours,
an unrepentant Bush supporter

Reefer Goddess,
I miss spoke in my last post by saying it was two months of negative growth and shouldve been two quarters. my bad.
Im simply stating that it is wrong to say we are in a recession. Slow down yes. But still growth.
As for my 21 mpg being compared to a Hummer and being paid off is not too shabby.
In your post you seem to imply that bush was reponsible for 9/11. Please tell me that is not what you meant.

Reef Goddess's picture

Lets just say the Japanese weren't all to blame for Pearl Harbor and I feel the same way about 9/11.

Anyways this is a dead subject, the dialogue on beach cleanup and educating kids about our environment is much more interesting.

TheRealTruth's picture

Shane,
I was merely asked a question and I served up an idea. If you are a non profit org and a voice of the people, then you should expect that some of those voices come from outside your organization. How else do you expect to bring in new "locals". I was not mocking but giving friendly critic from an outsider. You can get all your members together and think you are relevent in your small circle, but you have to be relevant to others outside that circle if you are going to grow as a force.
I have been to your meetings and movie premiers several times to see what the vibe is and just don't find enough substance. I do keep up with your issues and participate in an indirect way when I think it is worthwhile to me. Be it writing an email to gov./newspaper or bringing up awareness of the issue with coworkers friends etc.
I do not know were Surfrider should put their efforts or resources, but I know were I want to put mine and I don't find it to be focused on SF at this time. There are too many great causes and i think my personal effort is be used on other fronts. I hope one day we see down the same path. That may change That is my personal choice and mean no disrespect.

Perkocet,
Very well said. I checked out the SF site and 'think you guys are going in the right direction with this initiative! Keep this up and maybe i will have to reconsider.....

For those you car about our energy consumption and renewable energy. Check this article out to see what is going on with our current energy policy, and if so inclined do something about it and get involved!

Wow things really heated up around here with this discussion. Looks like more people are spending time on their computer then surfing this week.

Well on the surf front although it wasn't nearly as big as yesterday if you ventured out into PBC this afternoon you might of noticed a knee to waist high NE swell filtering into spots that haven't seen it all week (well according to Surfline any way). I was down in RR area and notice a few sets coming in at waist high if not better. There was a wait in between the better sets but it was very fun. It was hard to say if it was picking up or if this was just left overs. Yet it was something better then nothing.

As far as this GAS prices and gas wasting is concerned I truly think we should start organizing carpools amongst members on this forum. I'm sure on any given day at least 5 of you get into your gas guzzler and drive north to search out a wave. Why not share the ride and go all in one car? Save gas, save money, save the environment and make some new friends in the process. Oh no that's not cool, that gay right? Come on grow up and take responsibility!

C.Leon's picture

i agree W (carpooling)...too bad the wave season is over...lets hope we get some hurricane swell this year; last year was kind of weak.

reefgoddess: this might be a stupid question but is it possible to grow the coral you are growing out in the ocean?

kshane's picture

Not dissin you, Truth. And it is cool to differ with SF. My point is that we work hard with limited resources. When someone says what we do does nothing or doesnt have any real impact, I have to take exception. We have seen some real milestones spearheaded by Surfrider locally and statewide. We educate, inspire, get our hands dirty, donate our time to other group's efforts (Autism Surfcamp for example) and work with the press, local and state government officials to make change happen on a greater level. But, none of it is easy. We all have fulltime jobs, families, etc ... I thank God every day we have people like Wyatt who kept the fire alive when no one else cared, or people like TJ who had an incredible gift to inspire and ignite a firestorm, or people like perkocet, josue, lou and the list goes on of people who are the day to day backbone of the tribe down here. These people all give so much and never ask for anything in return. It gives pause to any self endulgences one has. My hats off to all of them, as they truely are making a difference every single day.

Cheers, Truth... Pray for waves and peace on ya.
shane

bat3flotr,

1) 21 mpg is, "not too shabby"??? Seriously? For a truck, perhaps you have a point - but in general, considering there are cars available that get 45 - 50mpg+ - 21 isn't so good at all.

2) To reiterate what crsurf already pointed out (perhaps you missed it?) - nuclear energy is not a viable alternative because it is simply too dangerous; the long-term toxicity of nuclear waste creates too many health risks. Also, in the age-of-terrorism - a nuclear power plant is a perfect target for anyone wishing to kill gazillions of people both quickly and long-term.

3) Wake up and smell the downslide. We may not be in a recession just yet - but it is quickly approaching. Home foreclosures are increasing, gas prices are steadily increasing, the value of the dollar is very low and continuing to fall, and the banks are in trouble. How does that NOT indicate a recession is coming?

4) Anyone who can STILL support G.W. Bush and this administration, after nearly 8 years of the WORST Presidential record in HISTORY, well, how do I say this diplomatically - WTF I failed diplomacy 101 - has no damn brain cells.

Real Truth - you seem pretty "green" to me. (And I ride my trusty ten-speed all over the place, re-use and recycle everything conceivable, have written lots of letters, signed many petitions, called many representatives on behalf of legislation for the environment, and worked with Greenpeace). Keep it up, bro...

Wyatt - Bored??? LOL

I'm all for carpools, too...

~peace!~

Excellent posts and views. And now we take a short break for something called surf (actually surflets).  Thanks also Mr W (no not that one) for also staying in the surf zone.

Slight increase in winds by NWS 15-20 knts  out of the East should keep us in the ridable range today and possibly tomorrow. Yea thats the big news. Not much but at least we can get wet going into the homestretch.

Mr W.'s picture

Choppy knee high dribble out there, go to work.

A note on Nuclear energy. The amount of power it makes when compared to the waste, makes Nuclear the Greenest of all massproduced electricity. The old reactors are awesome and the new designs even better. I hope you all send some time to see just how much waste is really made.

Slider,
your points are well taken. In my posts my tacoma was being compared to a Hummer and the fact that my truck is paid off is where im really saving GREEN . 21 MPG for a 4 door truck which I need for work and to transport my LB for the small days the smart car just isnt practical for me.
Yes times are tough for a lot of pepole I do agree. But we are not in a recession.
The good thing about it is that home prices are reasonable again and not overinflated.
This last one always gets me in trouble but here it goes....
G.W. is our yours and mine President. The only one we have. I support him. He is by no means perfect but is sincere and is doing the best he can. The fact that he is taking it to our enemy when no other president did is reason enough. The next president I will support also no matter man, woman white or black. He will be my and your president. His time is almost over and you can complain about the next one because that one will do things we all donot agree with either. By the way Iran is next. Tomahawks and MOABS will fly Lots wont like but like Saddam, Amidinejad and the Iatolla will bring it upon themselves. God bless G.W. and The United States of America.

Mercy before self sacrafice.

Really solid discussion going on. A lot of people seem very passionate about their views which is really good; a lot better than the complacency that defined the last 10-15 years. I just want to bring a interesting connection to the table that i have noticed...

The movement going on right now (call it the 'green' movement, the 'hope' obama message, or whatever) is very, very comparable to the sixties. I mean just at the surface you have the Iraq war (vietnam), bush (reagan), obama (JFK), iran (china) but I think what the coolest part about it is the social revolution thats going on. Whether you want to believe that its happening or not is for you decide, but take a second and look at whats going on around you can see it very clearly.

In the sixties the younger generation rebelled and demanded change from the older more conservative norms of the 50s. They got their change by voting JFK into office, retreating from vietnam. All that started with the younger generation asking questions and speaking up. Now you are starting to see, with the help of Obama organizing younger voters, the younger generation becoming more and more active and demanding more accountability in politics and in the american home.

People are stopping and thinking, discussing, exchanging ideas on how or what or why something needs to be done. Thats the key - people are starting to ask questions for themselves and not letting politicians or the media ask those questions for them. 5 - 10 years ago this wasnt happening at all.

So to bring this back full circle, the posts are exactly what starts this type of social movement. So whether you agree or don't agree on what someone said isn't really the point. The point is that more of these discussion need to be happening if we want things to change. Dont rely on politicians, business people, the media to do anything - they got us where we are now.

Just keep an eye out for midget subs next time you go surfing...

I remember last year towards the end of may, we got a blast of NE chop that lasted varied from NE to E to eventually SE...and it lasted for about two weeks...the first week it was NE shoulder high for a day or two followed by a couple days of E chop in the chest high range, then it kinda mellowed out during the week to knee to thigh to occ waist, the weekend rolled around and it switched SE for that weekend, I think it was the first weekend of june, and for sat and sunday it was fun ass SE chop at south..it was fun as hell and by that last day of waves my eyes were so shot from all the onshores...and then it got flat...so lets not say its summer just yet, we still got a little of opp for some more waves before flat time....

Last year there were waves on Memorial day. I remember because thats the day I later broke my leg playing Dodge Ball at a BBQ! For the next 2 months it was flat in Miami, which was fine because I had two fractures and a torn ACL. I still need knee surgery.

shiiiiiiit...that would be phenomenal...honestly i will settle for some 6 to 8 ft seas and E winds at 25 knots for a few days...after all the driving upcoast i have been doing it would be nice to go to south for some decent ones for a few days, that way i can go to La Playa and get a little cafesito after and check out the local topless talent on my way back out for my second sesh...god i wish i was in the water right now instead of work...i guess we will see what happens, either way hopefully hurricane season brings us something....

For all you Bush supporters. It is NOT American to blindly support whomever is in power. It IS American to voice our protest against injustice. Against Bush's administration for lying to us about why we needed to invade Iraq. Against his allowance to let troops torture prisoners. Against his efforts to secretly bypass our laws and tap into our phone calls. Against his administration's efforts to plant military advisors into the Main media outlets and lie about progess in Iraq while being paid by defense contractors. Against his administration keeping the EPA from publishing tests on the toxicity of consumer products. If you want to call him your leader, your commander in chief, then HE is ultimately responsible for the actions of his administration and military. He in no way represents who I am or what I believe in. If you support him, then you are wearing blinders and you need to take them off before the next election.

Please bro, quit your crying and stop trying to blame your problems on the President.
If so upset go live in another country.
Easy as that.

I LOVE OIL!!!

Hey Soulger, where was that though? There's no such thing as long waves in Miami!

CRsurf,
You are right ,it is not American to follow blindly and You are right ,in America we do have the right to protest against injustice . Injustice is what we fought against in Iraq, WMD or not Saddam got what he deserved as well as his sons Uday and Qusay. The Gallows and 50 cal respectivley.
Putting underwear on the heads of prisoners/terrorists in Abu Grab is not torture. Beheading of Nicolas Berg ... now thats TORTURE! Google it!
Secretly bypassing our laws to tap our phones? Congress approved that act. Tap my phone all you want. I have nothing to hide. Do you? Im not talking to Al Qeda are you?
Bla bla bla with the media and bla bla bla with the EPA. If its imported from China it is probably toxic. dont put it in you mouth
G.W. Your leader. Your commander in chief.
Representing Truth, Justice and the American way. What do you represent?

Mercy before self sacrafice.

Mr W.'s picture

Your not talking to "Al Qeda"!?!? Dude what the matter with you?? They provide the best surf reports! They are in strict competetion with Surfline from what I hear. 1-900-Abu-Dabi is the best place to get your oil slicked wave updates. Rahad (kinda like Mike Watson but with terbin and long beard) from Abu-Dabi will tell it to you like it is, they know when and were all the bounce swells happen. Hell if their reporters give you bad reports that are not within an actual foot they get beheaded! That's dedication to the cause. So if Bush isn't letting you call Abu-Dabi or "Al Qeda" then express your concern and go vote next time.

Abu is calling for more chop tomorow .

Thank you Mr. W. for the co
