Forecast for the week

Forecast Pete

At least we are in the pattern of ridables as of late.  Some interesting patterns coming up. First we get a short shot of SE windchop on Monday. Models are iffy on the fetch so it still remains to be seen if it pans out. We need at least 15 knts and 110 deg wind to allow traction on the Fla straits to give us those fun SE ridables that we usually get this time of year. Some of you have noticed the past few years we sometimes get light local winds with very fun SE windswell as the winds are stornger down the straights. This one has the possibility of that setup but it will be short lived as a weak front comes down early in the week and changes the wind patterns. Up the road offers up weak NE swell also starting tomorrow and the stronger NE swell now purported to arrive sometime Tuesday (barring the decay effect). There is a possibility of the swell being greeted by SW-NW winds somewhere upcoast as the front approaches but the timing of that is the wildcard. By Wed  the winds turn North and pick up chopping things out but also giving us a short shot of N/NE windchop.  Way further out  (like next weekend) a pattern of increasing E/SE winds comes up and gives us a decent chance of bread and butter windchop down here. Overall a decent pattern to keep us happy before the flat season arrives.  Enjoy Laughing

Waves for the Chopes trials event are sick. 8-10 with 12 footers in there. Hope the CT gets good waves for the event next week. Go K9!

Reef Goddess's picture

Hey guys, hope you caught some of the sloppy stuff.

I went surfing on Friday, was kinda like a white water river ride. lol As usual for this time of year when its very windy there was a ton of sargassum in the water at Sobe. Of course a lot of it brushed up against me while I was surfing; when some of it touched me, I felt a mild skin irritation but didn't think much about it.
You know sea wasps are much more bothersome. But the next day I woke up with super itchy rash bumps wherever the sargassum touched me, I'm going crazy with itchiness!!!! Was this sea lice or what? This is the first time that this has happened to me, argh! Feels like aquatic poisin ivy........ Any good remedies? I'm not a very allergic person, but I've applied cortisone, took an allergy pill, tried topical benadryll, nothing helps!!! Gonna try apple vinegar next and see if that works.

M&M

What do you mean the rum is gone and you forgot the lighter? How am I supposed to smoke this fatty??!!

Reef Goddess's picture

Ah yes, did a little research and its def sea lice stings. Weird thing is that I actually don't have any stings around where my bathsuit was, its mostly on my forearms and legs. Do they hang out in sargassum sometimes?

Mr W.'s picture

The thick masses of Sargassum provide an environment for a distinctive and specialised group of marine animals and plants, many of which are not found elsewhere. So sea Lice are no exception to this and love to hang out in these areas.

My rule of thumb when surfing is to avoid brushing up against anything that is floating around me and stay away from the floaters if possible.

Aghhh!! Yea I was out on friday too and my forearms are all itchy I im scratchin my forearms looking like a junkie in need of a fix. C'mon baaaaby, I just want a little swell.

Goddess - Yep, sealice, (thimble jellyfish larvae). They float, so wherever there's flotsam, they can be there. Mother's Day to Father's Day is the typical season, but the last two years have not been too bad.  Your suit may have been tight enough to keep them out, but lycra and boardshorts trap them and trip the nematocysts covering the larvae to fire into your skin and inject the venom. Many times you don't feel it until the itch starts, and the itch can last quite a few days.  Thimble jellyfish larvae eat phytoplankton (algae) that in turn eat nitrogen from many sources, including outfall sewage and nitrogen from inlets and groundwater entering the ocean from under the dunes. The volume of fresh water entering the ocean from under the dunes is TWO MAGNITUDES more than what flows out our inlets, so whatever we pump into the aquifers winds up in the ocean.

i was in the sargassum patch as well. no itch. i think i have become immune to it.

Last week the Miami-Dade Co. commissioners voted on whether or not to allow building passed the Urban Development Line. The developers won by a vote of 9-4. Can you believe this? Contact the commissioners and let them know how you feel.

For: Jose Diaz, Joe Martinez, Natacha Seijas, Audrey Edmonson, Rebeca Sosa, Dorrin Rolle, Bruno Barreiro, Barbara Jordan, and Javier Souto.

Against: Carlos Jimenez, Katy Sorenson, Sally Heyman, and Dennis Moss.

Also, it might be good to e-mail the commissioners that voted against the applications and let them know that we support the hard work they have been doing.

Pura vida to all....hopefully we'll get some swellage before the feared flat spell of the summer. Get ur dive gear ready i guess. Or, save up for a plane ticket south. Submerg, i'm just waiting to find a job and then we're clear for Costa!

I can't believe no one is talking about the great 1-2ft wind surf we have here in South Beach today. All your friends are on it,  why aren't you there?

bouy couple hundred miles east of ocean city 44004 had swell 12-20 feet for about A Day or so (8PM SAT-8PM SUN) , perhaps this will be off the carolina's (41002) tonite- monday and then near martin/n palm beach sometime tuesday (in some decayed fashion) and showing up on fort pierce bouy circa 36 hours.

Nova Scotia  low looking stationary and good to produce ridables . Primary swell direction will be 57.254 deg so take that into account.

Locally NWS increased our winds (following the models) to 15 knts out of the SE. Those of you that check the winds on the buoys often noticed the winds came up to the near 20 knt cusp last night and continue today.  Our keys buoys are showing similar winds so it should be fun at the right tide today.

Mr W.'s picture

looks like we are in a pattern of lows forming off the NE coast of US so we might be in the rideables on off for the next week(s). Finaly the gods are on our side. Enjoy!

Just got a call from someone who hit South this morning. Knee to thigh high and kinda weak. Longboard the call.

Winds have unfortunately been dropping since the early am when they were 20 knts . currently at 13 knts so I don't know about the PM. Could pick back up as the day heats up

Anyone one else see the double shark bites at New S? http://www.local6.com/news/16017623/detail.html I hear that there are going to be lots again if we ever get surf so everyone stay out of the water.

And Chopes trials stopped for tow ins because it got to big. Sick monsters rolling through there. All on surfline.

Check out some shots of kitebeach last thurs www.osocarras.com

Truth's picture

I was at New Smyrna last weekend with the fam and a little girl got bit in the foot 10ft away from where my 7 year old was trying to catch waves with the boogie. Before she got bit, my son had come to me telling me that he had seen a shark swim right by his board. By the time I made my way to where I thought her parents were, she had gotten bit. Needless to say both my kids did not go in the water for the rest of the day.
I've been driving up to NSI for over a decade and I've seen lots of activity over the years, but last Sunday it was the worst I have ever seen. I walked up near to the Jetty to paddle out (after my son saw the shark); it was about 8:30am and about waist to chest….really clean really fun looking waves. I stood in about calf-deep water for about 20 minutes just looking at all the bait fish, dolphins, sharks, pelicans and every other bit of action that was going on…..about 10 ft away from me, in about waist high deep water I saw three sharks, two of them small, one of them at least 5ft.

I decided not to paddle out, most of the locals were not going out either, those who had gone out were coming back to land, all of them relaying how bad it was out there. A few of the guys with bigger logs stayed out, but it was just not worth it for the rest of us.

I ended up paddling out hours later after the feeding had subsided, but by then the wind was side-shorish. I may have missed out on a few good waves and maybe a couple of good little barrels but I still have my hands and feet intact.

pelu's picture

pete.. is it worth a drive tomorrow to RR with this crappy NE swell that's supposed to fill in?

Pelu, I think so. As of 5 am forerunners in the 14-15 sec range already arriving. Size is the factor with 2.5-3.5 ft size but that area does funnel swells more than others. Swell direction well within the circle path needed for the Palm Beaches.  Tide is always a factor. Winds light this am running SW down here W to NW up the road.  Go hit it if you can. I've missed too many work days this year so im out.  Today (or should I say this morning) is the day for this one. Enjoy

Pete any chances this will hold solid through the afternoon?

JOB won the trials event for the Chopes contest in some of the sickest 3 days of competitive surf ever. I promise you will be seeing a lot of footage if you check out the other big surfsites. Sick 9 and tens all day. And besides the shark attacks up the road,  like 120 some odd people got taken to see by a rip current and a surfer is still missing.

Submerg...costa is not looking like a reality in May...not hearing back from employers until the next couple weeks. I'm gonna give it until the end of the week until I say no way for sure. Maybe mid-August. sorry man.

Mr W.'s picture

Just got back from a lunch session here in NPBC solid waist to chest plus sets coming in with very clean conditions. Hope it last till after work.

took a walk up the beach ( past red reef park) and there was to my surprise a nice little tube every 5 or so minutes about waist high in the vicinity. jumped in (no board) and body surfed for about a half hour , had fun. Anyway winds turned on shore (ne at about 12 mph or so) and crapped it up (tide was rising as well) oh well, nice lil surprise

perhaps wed early morning will produce something
