Disrespect when its knee high
Posted October 28th, 2007 by Wilber Kookmyer
If someone keeps purposely dropping in on people when its knee high, do you just let him keep doing it?
Does it really matter if its knee high or head high to let this person know that he is disrespectful?
Society is made up of order and rules. Is surfing an uncontrollable sport without ethics and rules?

if its kneee high and he keeps on ill probablly let it slide, head high and clean and he keeps dropping in, were taking it to the beach!! haha
I usually just smile at the first one, if it is a decent wave I'll say something. if it becomes chronic, I'll paddle away if I can. If not sometimes I'll raise my voice.
one time at south, I was surfing by the jetty with 2 spongers who I'd never seen surf there. I was taking off deeper than them a bit behind the peak and cranking turns right where one guy kept trying to drop in. The second time I told the guy to watch it. Then the other guy dropped in on me twice. I politely asked him to stop, and he ignored me. The third time I was coming out of a turn and he hit my rail which threw me off balance conveniently when my weight was directed towards him. I totally tackled the bastard. He got all uppity and screamed, but I just shrugged my shoulders and told him he brought it on himself. Needless to say the two boogs left and I felt a bit sh1tty.
I like your technique TC. Smile and turn the other cheek then tackle the poor bastard. I am pretty much in agreement. Good call.
choppy/unorganized conditions gets a firm "HEY!", then usually a smile and a wave afterwards.
if it's alright with some organization, the blatant can get anything from a love tap to a dump off to a board thrown at em.
Few years back, kook at South Pointe dropped in on me several times - first he got the yell, then the love tap. He pulls out, i follow behind. I ask him, "That's the second time what's the deal? You're going to hurt someone." His response "If you see me going you have to yell or something."
I told him it's his responsibility to look and just paddled away. I'm sure he ignored my advice. Someone will take care of him someday (if not already).
does it ever get bigger than knee high?
perhaps the best advice is don't go out if it's knee high. look up the definition of groveling.
How can you drop in on somebody when its knee high?
if you call some one off a wave and back out, you mine as well paddle in, because you're not getting any more waves. any size.
I've always wanted to surf but got into drugs instead...well five years ago I got clean and just over a year ago some guy's got together and bought me a board...needless to say I haven't missed a day since, I just figure I'm paying my dues by going out even when it's knee high, I was out last Friday it was me and two other people and man it was pouring rain, but I was loving it. I pull off so many waves just because I figure I'm the newest one out there..I'm still trying to learn all the rules...so if I ever get in anyones way I assure it was not me being disrespectful, just me learning...I really try to stay on the fringe of the crowd anyway just to avoid any unnecessary encounters. I got three really nice rides today...felt like the first time I was actually surfing.
what knee high looks like..
