Surf Forecast
Forecast from Pete
Posted May 18th, 2012 01:23 AMWhoa- culture shock. After months of asylum in Maui heading back to the mainland to see family and friends . Currently in LA waiting for a flight to Ft Laudy. Been checking out the models for my two week stay in Fla land and things look interesting (at least for this time of year). Firstly we have a Nice SE fetch building in the Carib (from a very large Atlantic high pressure system) which will hopefully send some backround swell to those lucky enough to live or drive above the Bahama blockage. That should last for a few days if it gets enough traction and the winds crank enough. Secondly we have a decent NE fetch setting up along the Carolinas Elongated but narrow. . Models have been all over the place on this one and a few days ago it was looking kinda promising (Remember the May swell 5 years ago). Anyhows the interesting feature is a weak low that builds off the Carolinas which rides up to Nova Scotia by late week. Thats when things get interesting and models at 164 hrs out hint of a retrograde push back towards Fla land. If the stars align we may get NE swellage sometime Memorial day weekend. Not to mention closer to home a weak syetem is forecast to develop in the Fla straights and bring us SE winds late next week as well. None of this is guaranteed but keep your eyes and ears out for surfables soon. Wyatt and Rod both asked me to bring waves . Not going to guarantee anything but will bring positive vibes and hope to the SoFlo surf community. Surf seems to follow me so wax up those boards and lets get ready to rumble (Dodge dem pesky weekenders Memorial day weekend)

NICE!!! bring it Pete
BTW, i'm sure many of u knew Josh Adorno, if not by name then by face, we had a paddle out for him yest @ South in front of Penrods/Nicki's, his local growing up break like many of us. he unfortunatly passed about a week ago while overseas in an auto/bike accident. His crew in huntington Beach CA also had a memorial for him this past Mon. Live life to the fullest folks, ya never what's around the corner
RIP Josh.
Wow Pete, nice to have u back.
Just posted a few shots from my CR trip for ya viewin pleasure
RIP Josh, may you catch the endless wave.
Nice Pics B man, Looks really fun
Quick shot of N/NE swell late Sunday into Monday still in the picture,
Retrograde low was a tease and looks unlikely at this time. Still on for SE
winds next weekend strating as early as Friday, maybe a tab sooner. Def our
best bet.
Nice little spinning TS , not too much in our window but a little loop de loop improves chances. Anybody out there! Awfully quiet around hea
Pete! Are you around next weekend? What's the word on tomorrow AM at South? Anything rideable?
I'm around for two more weeks. Some swell in the water showing upcoast. Unlikely to reach here but you never know. SE winds may show up tue/wed but not likely next weekend as the models had hinted of earlier. Damn it's tough to predict around here. I'm really hoping to get in the water between work days (covering for Rod as he has knee surgery). Going to cocoa the following weekend to surf in the Surfrider contest.
TS Alberto more or less retrograded and is now forecasted to move (even for a brief period of time) more into our swell window. No, we haven't really seen much more than a trace with occasional rideable sets, but in Miami, that's always subject to change without notice! Keep your radar pinging and you just may get lucky.
SoBe has been pumping since sunrise waist to chest sets -- clean, glassy and super clear water.
^ lies. stay at work... I'm heading there now
Clean waist to chest seems funner than 11-13ft in my neck of the woods in Praia Macumba in Rio
Be careful what you ask for.. You might get it!
looks from the cams like what ever wave was @ South earlier has died down to shin dribble, still looks clean tho. any further reports appreciated
Pete, give a ring brother - you can crash here at the surf shack while up for the Surfrider contest.
Early AM on south beach was knee to chest high. Nice little groundswell on Sunday and Monday. Love those sneaker swells!
Thanks TJ- I just might take you up on that offer. Was thinking of calling you anyhows.
SE winds blowing pretty hard last night . Unfortunately didn't last but it did kick up some small ridables at South. Should actually improve as the tide comes in this am. Forecast is for the winds to pick up a bit. Tomorrow am could pull in some S/SE ridables. Almost made it out to South this am but couldn't get up early enough to beat traffic. Still a bit jet lagged. This little system moves out by Friday. Tons of squally weather out there. Palghetto expy was flooded last night . Keep the rain gear handy. Anything this time of year is a blessing.
enjoy
winds been cranking. maybe rideables at sobe today
definetly rideable , Hallandale some head high . washing machine .
First Shop is calling it well-overhead at SoBe. I haven't put eyes on it this afternoon... Evening sesh coming up!
sunday could be good as well for the weekend warriors
Dania , clean and some overhead . fun .
Leftovers today. It ain't over though. Said low is positioning and wrapping near the bahama banks . Cross yer fingers.
SoBe has been almost a legit surf spot this week! Fingers crossed for the weekend....
From NWS:
The low should move toward the northeast at about 15 mph during the next day or so...followed by a gradual turn back toward the west on Saturday. This system has a high chance...70 percent...of becoming a tropical or subtropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
Keep watching!
just lookin at the visible now....this thing looks like it Just got it's act more together. and the position looks very good for at least palm beach county into n. broward...without even seeing low level wind profile....would think things could get very nice again as soon as tommorrow
sry actually low level winds via bouy dont appear wonderful
Wow Cpick posting. Thats a treat.
Yea, current convection looks pretty good. Hope that fetch builds and elongates. Models are showing more length of fetch this weekend as the shear decreases and this subtropical system strengthens. . N/NE winds tomorrow into Sunday from Georgia up the Carolinas. Very strange this time of year. We maybe more in the sweet spot in Soflo than Mid Fla but that could change . Depending on the strength and track NWS is going to have a hard time pinning the wind directions for Fla
Storm is named and forecast to move west. safe to say we get something down here in the next 48 hours. Hopefully its like last sunday when it was glassy and chest high with only 10 people out all morning before the winds got on it. Snooze you lose. Darren
Wuddup from N.FL, hermanitos. Been a while, but man strom season getting stated early. We are starting to see early pulses from Beryl with no wind this morning (that will change); sets are already in the chest high range. Gonna be a soggy Mem Day weekend up here, and the winds around this lil' joker are pretty tight and erractic direction wise. We are looking for them to go W as soon as Sun afternoon.
Last week, Alberto gave up some goods. Glad to hears the MIA got some, and it looks like Beryl could send some your way too. Miss the 305 and miss that food even more! Vaca frita for life!! hahaha...
Holla...
Awright, Darren and Josue. The boyz are back. Nice rotation today vs yesterday. Check out the latest ASCAT pass here http://manati.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/ascat_images/cur_25km_TEST/zooms/WMBas86.png
Even though you get a very limited view and its nothing like our old departed friend quikscat you can still see the storm wraping more tightly and picking up windspeed. Now don't get too close to us. That sweet spot is going to be closer to Soflo so come on down for the weekend Josue. Don't forget your hip hop bag of tricks.
One of the problems with this storm is the small fetch size. On the plus side its a slow mover . Another is that the winds will be primarily pointed at North and Central Fla. (NE winds). But.... with a little angular speading it could very well pick up in the Palm Beach county's and up, less likely down here. Winds offshore lower half of Fla tomorrow am. I think tomorrow is a good call. Exactly where is the question.
Great to have you back Pete! Really miss your awesome forecasts and your always being on top of every little chance of a swell. Is it me or have all the usual forecasters come out of the woodwork now that Pete is posting forecasts every few hours like he did when he was living here? This is awesome! Hopefully you all find the right spot tomorrow!
Thanks., there are others here too and its been a slow wave season . I just happen to come back when a little action is around.
Check out the latest IR imagery. Doesn't tell the whole picture but you can see a little energy pointed our way.

Pete, I will call u in the AM! Got a sweet reef in Martin County! Low tide is at 630ish! Its gonna be GOOD all incoming with WSW winds! And yes, Pete revives the site!
ITS A GO !!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure where yet but buoys are up and winds are in place. Even though I partied last night I had the sense to put two alarm clocks on. I'll try to send some reports via smartphone . I'm flying solo so those that know me keep the coconut telegraph going.
Mahalo's for the blessings from King Neptune
Enjoy
South is flatskies go north
After thinking I was.going to get skunked the goods were delivered. Knee to thigh Hawaiian (waist to chest Florida standards). Treasure coast funness, a little slopey but very fun.
still flat at SoBe. Should have gone waaay upcoast... Sebastian/Melbourne/Satellite looks really good! Dammit. Hope you guys scored.
Up coast delivered the goods for sure! Overhead freight trains and super clean at Patrick's this am..had to get up real early, but it was well worth it...until something really big hit me from behind and nearly knocked me of my board...didn't get a glimpse of what it was but it sure ended my session after several hours and my ass is really sore tonight from where whatever it was drilled me from behind...cheap shot!
Life is short...go surfing!
Wasn't able to get out there today. Any other reports? Any cance for leftovers anywhere on the dawn patrol?
i don't have experience getting drilled from behind but it sounds uncomfortable. yesterday was chest to a foot overhead and glassy somewhere between palm beach and sebastian. love that stretch of coast
LOL!!!!!!
ass really got sore huh.... lol
Not much left today. Yesterday's waves are all but gone. Hope some of you scored. We went up to treasure coast yesterday around noon and score some sweet head high barrels. Best day I had in a while Felt like I was somewhere else on a surf trip considering how clean and hollow the waves were. The am was a bit touch and go but driving up the road for a second session a bit further north really paid off.
It hit the "cheek" of my right back side as I was siting up on my board you perverts...
The waves were choice and it was worth the long drive, even with that scary experience...hope no one has that happen to them...
"barrels" from Beryl !
Life is short...go surfing!
Some of the models show Beryl doing a loop out in our window, so maybe an encore chance in a couple days? WWIII has been inoperable on this site for two weeks. It also stopped allowing the forecast maps to be shown by placing the curser over the time period. But thanks Pete! It's nice to see more frequent forecast posts here, rather than one forecast every two weeks, even when there are systems to talk about and waves around. I'm sure the traffic here will increase again when these problems are solved.
off to costa rica for 9 days. 4 days at playa negra and 4 days in santa teresa. not expecting anything major just shoulder to 1 ft overhead range but ill take that anyway for a week straight. hope u guys score something locally. pura vida. I'm out!
Adventure night in Miami Beach! Check out this flyer and show up to support their efforts...
heard about a shark attack this past wknd on surfer in Jax, couldn't find the article???
Looks like a good ENE/NE Groundswell from a sub-tropical low! Friday-Sunday! Martin County has been good lately!
To offset the current flatness, who not book a trip to Costa Rica? American Airlines has flights for $362, Miami to San Jose, non-stop for many dates in July and August.
While we stare at S. Fla flatness, on the other side of the world another historic moment in
paddle surfing enfolds...............ridiculous waves, and surfing......
ck it out if u havent already.........
